Very, Very, Very Early 2018 MBB Predictions
Safe to say that there is no emerging consensus on who should be 2-seed after Northeastern. W&M, CofC and Hofstra each get one 2-seed, one-3 seed and one 4-seed vote from the three prognostications below:

College Sports Madness
1. NE
2. W&M
3. Hofstra
4. CofC
Blue Ribbon Basketball
1. NE
2. CofC
3. W&M
4. Hofstra
5. JMU
6. UNCW
7. Delaware
8. Elon
9. Towson
10. Drexel
Three-Man Weave
1. NE
2. Hofstra
3. CofC
4. W&M
5. JMU
6. UNC-W
7. Towson
8. Delaware
9. Drexel
10. Elon

Three-Man Weave has a longer than typical write-on the CAA:

Really solid review of the conference. I'm getting excited to see how the team looks this year. I think it'll be a fun year.

Notice how they have Owens as a starter. Surprise. Can't wait until the homecoming scrimmage

RE: Very, Very, Very Early 2018 MBB Predictions
Having seen Owens twice in informal scrimmages there is every reason to see him as possibly starting at point guard. This kid has the court smarts, the athleticism and an arrogance to do it. Not to malign Luke Loewe, however...he and Owens will battle for the starting slot every day in practice. The good news is that both young men will play lots.

Audige is a talent...tough, athletic, and talented, he seems destined for big things during his four years at Kaplan Arena..and he can play defense.

The ultimate success of this team will come down, in my opinion, to how much of a contribution our talented freshman class will make.

Interesting to see the mention of Owens as potential starting PG. Previous commentary on another chain had talked about how much Thornton Scott was impressing, and of course the early accolades about Audige, but hadn’t heard anything yet about Owens. Still thinking Loewe has the inside track on the starting job but what tremendous depth to have not one but maybe two freshmen who could see serious PG minutes. Can’t wait for the season to start!

The commentary about the Tribe's defense is scorching ... Rocco is tame compared to this author.

Toxic waste dump? Too funny!

I'd almost be offended if it didn't ring so true.

Is this where I post my chart showing where the teams that won the CAA ranked on defense relative to W&M or is it burned into everyone's memory by now?

RE: Very, Very, Very Early 2018 MBB Predictions
I awake in the night screaming about the defensive charts, but now thanks to a recent post, I also hear Sonny Bono singing I Got you Babe. Sure hope we play better defense this year or my therapy bills are going to be high.

Love the prospects, love the schedule, now all that is left is to work hard, stay healthy, and see what happens beginning in November. The CAA is going to be tough again, but it appears several schools have upgraded their nonconference schedule. Will be pulling for a lot of CAA success until the end of December.

Finally, shocked that TMW has JMU ranked 5th ahead of UNCW.

RE: Very, Very, Very Early 2018 MBB Predictions
We're clearly not going to magically morph into a top defense, but I do wonder how much the awful defense last year was tied to having no depth. It seemed that Shaver was ok with guys not working as hard on the defensive end because he knew he couldn't wear the starters out. Hoping that will be different this year (plus replacing Burchfield with even an average defender will have a big impact defensively).

RE: Very, Very, Very Early 2018 MBB Predictions
As long as the production is there, the depth of this year's team should pay dividends. If there is a distinct fall off, expect coach Shaver to tighten up the rotation like last year. That is what the early OOC schedule is for. See what you have and what works so that the lineups can be solidified by conference play.

Which is why I have very low expectations for our OOC record. Shaver has a lot of new moving parts he needs to check out and I think he will prioritize developing/finding the right rotation over the W-L record.

There is this kool-aid drinking, optimistic, everything is sunny side of me that says last year's team made a MAJOR jump on FTs last year (12% increase), so what if this year there's a 12% increase in defensive performance?

September is for optimists :)

Lol, well it was funny watching him fuss at Scott Smith. What a joke Scott would have been a lot better if he had a good coach!!

Part of it is our offense was very efficient and proficient, thus opponents had more possessions. One guy like TT up top to apply pressure and I think we'll hold most opponents to under 80 points.

a) The lack of depth didn't help, but it's hard to say that was the problem when they had depth the year before and still stunk at defense.

b) Last year they gave up 115.5 adjusted points per 100 possessions according to KenPom, 335th in the country. 12% better would be 101.4 points per 100 possessions, which would put them 104th nationally and second in the CAA. If they have the 2nd best defense in the CAA they're winning 16 conference games and every tourney game by 15 points.
