RE: Week 3 Power Ranking
After rewatching the Memphis game last night, I calmed down a little bit. Memphis is really fast on both sides of the ball. They have unbelievable speed to simply overwhelm opponents AND their offense plays on the hurry-up mode all game..they will score 50pts in many games, even against fellow AAC opponents. Most teams have either a great running offense or great aerial attack, but Memphis has both! Their RB can make sharp cuts, shed block, has a great vision to find the holes, and turns on the burner to go the distance. All this and our wide-eyed freshmen DBs equated to 59pts. Our starters probably would have saved few less touchdowns and kept them in the low 40s, which isnt great but that's how scary that Memphis offense is. I rather see us play a typical P5 than Memphis and I'm dead serious.

Offensively, we moved the ball well. We should've scored around 30pts but mistakes by the special team hampered us again. When you really pay close attention, our offense is improving steadily from week1 to week 3. We would have blown out Kennesaw if we were in mid-season shape.

They are absolutely not a team you can just tackle with a shoulder hit.

There's no doubt in my mind we're in the top tier of the conference as far as talent. It's just that with Tyson Summers being the coach the last two seasons a lot of our guys in some ways are having to learn actual college-level concepts for the first time.

Maybe not the horses like we had in 14 or 15.. but I do think the scheme is there to do it

Week 3 into the rebuild, you can see quantum improvements on both sides of the ball.

I think people should be really worried about our defense.

We've played enough defense the last couple of years to win more games provided we had a competent offensive scheme.

Well we've got that now. I don't expect to amaze people with stuff like we had when Breida was blowing up scoreboards, but we'll do ok.

Maybe I don't get it. Why is everyone putting App first? Troy just beat Nebraska in their house and got paid to do it.

Troy
State
App (and they could interchange with us in an instant because we have no way of knowing since Southern Miss pussed out)
ULM (I'm shaky on this but maybe they'll prove me right)
South Al (I think they will find their footing after the Texas State game)
ULL (Cajuns could very easily make a liar out of me)
GaSo
Coastal
GaState
Texas State (We really want you to be better. Really)

I have wondered the same thing. I guess taking PSU to overtime gets more respect than beating Nebraska. Not putting down APP's game at all. Great effort.

App State might literally have the most impressive performance of a G5 against a P5.

I don't do that "but you lost blah blah blah moral victory" garbage. Going up there and taking Penn State to OT is better than beating Maryland or Georgia Tech and the rest of those P5s the AAC beats their chest for defeating at home.

I said the same thing of people pooh poohing our very close losses to 2 solid ACC teams in 2014 that we put a combined 900 yards of offense on.

Now with that said, I'm not convinced App is the the clear #1, either.

We REALLY REALLY want to be better.

The two positives that came from the USA game were that the offensive line was looking closer to almost average which is a huge step up for us, and our QB played a pretty decent game.

Now, the QB got dinged up in the game, and we still fell apart in the end, but hey... we looks for silver linings where they arrive.

RE: Week 3 Power Ranking
Right now, not sure who is 1,2,3 in the conference, APP gave PSU a scare of the season, and looked great doing it, no miracle plays, we stood toe to toe with them trading punches, but the 49er’s are a joke, can’t claim much in learning about ourselves and then the cancelled game, so we have an incomplete picture after 3 weeks. Troy gets a good victory against a Big Ten opponent, which is great, expect that program is in a major rebuilding mode, and then theres the Boise game, Ark St. didn’t look particularly great against that cupcake in the first game, got throttled by the best team in the country, but made so many mistakes, that it was way, way too easy for Bama, but then played a great game against Tulsa. I think we should wait a month to revisit this topic, when we have a clearer idea how the teams are trending.

Don’t think he was tooting his own horn. From the looks of it he was consistent with many on the board this season when he put us at #5 spot. Also, tooting our own horn would be saying something like we’re 4-0 ATS against USA and still beat you 52-0 in what was probably the worst season of football since we restarted our program. TOOT TOOT!

That's an interesting comparison because I actually feel like those two games are opposites of each other.

When we played Alabama, they had the number one defense in the nation and we had the number one offense in the FCS, and it showed. What kept us out of the game was that our small defense could never stop their high level offense.

When we played Clemson, it was our offense that was lacking in ability against the number one defense, and our defense that was shutting down their offense at least for a little less than a half.

Which is our old self. Good offense but poor defense.

Pretty much agree - also the situation isn't static - Arkansas State generally improves as they go along and once again they have a bunch of new guys getting significant playing time. I'm sure Troy and APP will improve as well.

I don't think that is true about any of our good teams. Focus has always been on our offense, but we had the Sun Belts best defense in 2014 and 2nd best in 2015.

Surely you mean Monroe...

No ULM hasn’t impressed me. They escaped SE Louisiana by the skin of their teeth. They just barely beat a terrible Southern Miss team.

Meanwhile Louisiana destroyed a team they were supposed to destroy and are getting destroyed by a team they were supposed to get destroyed by. So basically we don’t know. That’s why I’m putting them in as the dark horse.

Not all blowouts are the same. Miss State has 26 SRs and one hell of a QB. But I didn't see quit in our team, and I saw better play calling and better conditioning. So while I'm disappointed, there's more than meets the eye here. How much still remains to be seen.
