App: A-........needed the win to get a perfect score but a damn near flawless game.

SBC: C-.......5-5 with some trouncing weaker schools, some getting trounced by bigger schools, and Troy's D laying an egg vs Boise. That one was the lynch pin for the conference.

A- for coming within a few inches of knocking off the #10 team in the country? I'll give 'em a solid 99 on that performance. The only deduction was for a few penalties (not the chop block calls after listening to Satterfield).

C- general impressions: played below expectations, young guys need to tackle better overall, wasn't 100% crisp with our execution, BUT this young team appears mentally tough and that's something this coaching staff can build upon. Both the offense and defense elevated their play level when the game was on the line.

-Our young cornerbacks were clueless against constant cut blocking at their knees, which allowed KSU's RB to run to the perimeter for easy 4yds all freaking day. It was truly frustrating to see our corners flopping around on the grass, when our coaches called the right plays to have right personnel at the right places to shut down all their triple option running lanes.
-We need to replace our right tackle with one of the younger tackles with more athleticism. He couldn't block KSU's star DE who transferred from Tennessee. Of course RBs cant do anything when that DE would blow up the play in the backfield.
-We are confused why some of our best starters rode the bench all game. Backups started in place of many proven guys on roster who may even get drafted with a great senior year. Very confused about this.
-pleased that we found a superb duel-threat QB and WRs who can take attention away from Penny Hart.

The scheme KSU runs negates players being in the correct position. That's why you see option fans laugh at the whole "assignment football" thing. Ya'll were clogging the middle, but even with the frustration about the cut blocks, you didn't have defenders in the alley consistently. Their perimeter game was confusing your defense overall....but that's kinda what it does. People hate playing it more than just because of the blocking, but because it requires so much focus the entire game and teams unfamiliar with it spend too much time thinking about how to defend it than doing it naturally like they do with more conventional attacks.

I would imagine those guys were suspended but it wasn't announced. No reason to keep someone on the bench in that case. Seems to make the most sense though.

I'm curious to see how Ellington comes along. I've called him a poor man's Cam Newton already, he just seems to have that kind of build. Anyone tackling him up high will likely come up empty cause he appears to have the ability to power out of those situations. It's going to be interesting facing you with an actual dual threat guy.

Finally got some answers. I get this reason but...boy CSE likes to gamble. Oh well we won.

Many defensive starters at DL, DE, CB, LB were held out on purpose by Shawn Elliott. CSE feared pointless injuries against a cut blocking team like Kennesaw. Basically he played a lot true freshmen who could be redshirted for the rest of the year if they happen to suffer lower body injuries against KSU's cut blocking. He also treated this FCS opener like a preseason game to find out some things about our freshmen. So giving up 20pts to a FCS squad full of senior starters...I feel little better.

GS: C-, Started slow on offense and the defense (to me) just couldn't stop much of what SCstate was doing (SCState just couldn't quite get the ball to open receivers and turned it over after some long sustained drives. We improved in the 2nd half, but we have a long way to go. Might have a little bit better idea after Umass. But I don't think we finish above .500 without Werts developing further and speeding up the decision making and the OL making massive improvements on blocking.

SBC- C+, App deserves an A-. Yes its a loss and no moral victories, but on performance based grading that's what they deserve. If you are going on win/losses then there is no scale. it's pass or fail.

Not really, considering our next three games are against NCST, Memphis, and WMU.

Conference C

I would like to make a few points about the Cajuns win Saturday against Grambling. This was Napiers first game and obviously fans were anxious to see how it was going to go. Most people thought the Cajuns would win, but the questions were by how much and how would the team execute. The thing that has most Cajuns fans pleased with is the execution. I was on vacation and so I watched the game on replay when we returned. Here are some of my observations:

Even though the Cajuns stumbled out of the gate, the Cajuns offense quickly righted the ship and played a very good first half. By halftime it as obvious that the Cajuns could pretty much move the ball at will and score points in bunches. In the second half the coaches were able to rest starters and give the newcomers some playing time. This was a good sign and there was no need to run the score up on a team that was visible disheartened. Our running backs were crisp and our wide receivers and tight ends looked pretty good as well. Our lineman were clearly in better physical condition and actually protected our QBs pretty well.

The defense executed much better than last season and were much better organized. They look like a different unit because of the players picked up during the off season and the addition of last season’s redshirt players. Defense was horrible last season, so this is an encouraging sign.

The jury is out on special teams, they still need some work. Some of the things that they were able to get away with against Grambling, would not fly against a decent FBS team. We definitely need some work there.

Now does all of this mean the Cajuns are “back?” I think the answer is not necessarily, but they could by better this year and they appear to be more focused and more discipline. Could they be bowl eligible? I think it is possible. We will find out a lot when they play Coastal in 3 weeks. I do not expect to find out much against Miss State, but it would be a plus if we could give them a decent game. I would not write this team off regardless of the results of that game.

It may or may not be this season, but I think Napier has this team headed in the right direction. His style is opposite of Hud, he is strictly business: very little of the rah-rah stuff. IMO this is a good thing at this point.

Would not disagree with you. USC will be tough this season. If they get by Georgia this week end, they may be in Atlanta at season's end.

Can we borrow him for a little while to show Anderson how to do that?
