It's nice that you're updating this every week. Just FYI, in lineal championship games, Nebraska is 19-7-1.

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion
Thanks for the correction, my grep was incorrect, Nebraska is 19-8 in lineal championship games. When a challenger ties the lineal champion then I count it as a loss since the challenger did not take over the reign.

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion
I know a grep is a computer programming thing, but that's about it. 03-wink

You're missing a couple games in West Virginia Wesleyan's run as lineal champ in 1924 (vs. Bethany on 11/22 and @ Davis & Elkins on 11/27).

Also, we talked about this a little via PM, but I see you include what I'd consider exhibition games, against teams such as athletic clubs and temporary/non-academy military teams (e.g., West Coast Army). If you count these games, then wouldn't you have to consider the lineal championship as going to the San Francisco Olympic Club in 1931 due to their win over St. Mary's Gaels on 11/7?

It took quite a bit of digging, particularly when it came to the California military team games (many thanks to the San Pedro News Pilot on https://cdnc.ucr.edu), but I was able to trace this tangent from the "real" lineal championship to the point where it would have merged back in again: Georgia over Alabama on Halloween 1942. Check out the "SF Olympic Club Tangent" tab here.

I missed purging a few exhibition games from my DB. I agree with your opinion that exhibition games should not be included in the lineal history. Regenerated the lineal championship history.

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion
while updating the script to support purging exhibition games I made another update to track the lineal championship within a conference. I tried SEC as an example. Since the SEC branched off from the Southern conference in 1933 I used the first matchup in the southern conference where Auburn defeated Clemson 56-0 on 10/14/1921 as the initial game of the SEC lineal championship. I added a SEC tab to the link in the OP. The SEC lineal championship has been in the state of Alabama 43% of the games & University of Alabama is the current lineal champion.

school reigns wins loses
Alabama 31 222 55
Tennessee 20 77 55
Florida 14 75 48
Auburn 19 64 63
Louisiana State 17 58 59
Georgia Tech 10 55 23
Georgia 18 37 54
Mississippi 8 21 43
Mississippi State 8 18 61
Arkansas 5 11 27
Kentucky 5 9 50
Vanderbilt 5 6 59
South Carolina 3 5 21
Tulane 2 3 17
Texas A&M 1 2 4
North Carolina 1 1 5
North Carolina State 0 0 1
Virginia 0 0 1
Washington & Lee 0 0 1
Duke 0 0 2
VMI 0 0 2
Clemson 0 0 3
Sewanee 0 0 4
Missouri 0 0 6

Also populated Big Ten in a another tab of the link. The first game in the Big Ten lineal championship was Minnesota defeats Purdue 14-0 on Oct 17, 1896 in the Western Conference. Ohio State is the current champion, and Ohio State is also the current all conference division-I lineal championship. Ohio State & Michigan have dominated the big ten lineal championship by holding the lineal championship 43% (same percentage as Alabama+Auburn) of the games.

school reigns wins losses
Ohio State 36 173 64
Michigan 32 164 71
Illinois 15 67 79
Michigan State 19 64 45
Minnesota 21 62 81
Wisconsin 21 56 95
Purdue 16 48 68
Iowa 18 47 82
Chicago 7 35 27
Northwestern 13 35 71
Penn State 6 24 19
Indiana 5 9 72
Nebraska 1 1 4
Rutgers 0 0 3
Maryland 0 0 4

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion
The Miami Hurricanes hold the record for the longest run as lineal champion: 32 straight games from 2000-2002.

From 1957-1964, the SEC set the current record for the most consecutive games (81) in which a single conference held the lineal championship. It went from Tennessee (3) to Ole Miss (9) to LSU (12) to Tennessee (1) to Ole Miss (20) to LSU (11) to Ole Miss (14) to Alabama (11).

The only time a school has spent a single run as lineal champ in more than one conference is West Virginia's 6-game run in 2012: from winning the "belt" for the Big East in the Orange Bowl on January 4 to losing it to new Big 12 conference mate Texas Tech on October 13.

The Miami teams that Butch Davis constructed at the turn of the Millenium were really something, as good as the best Jimmy Johnson/Dennis Erickson teams of a decade earlier.

They were so good that a bum coach like Larry Coker was able to ride them to a national title in 2001 and within a hair of another in 2002, but truth is, Miami was probably the best team three straight years, 2000 - 2002.

OT: NCAA lineal champion
Some of us in C-USA track a lineal Championship amongst Texas-based teams in the conference.
We don’t need a spreadsheet for it since there’s only (at most) four teams a year participating. North Texas holds it and is defending next against UTEP.

But since you have a spreadsheet... I’d be very interested to see the lineal championship traced amongst all Texas-based teams.

I’d give it to Texas to start in 1902 with Texas A&M taking it with a 12-0 win in that year’s season finale. (Based on the 1-A database I typically use)

After a few defenses, Trinity would eventually take it late in 1903 but since they’re not 1A I lose the trail there.

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion
I generate the spreadsheet from a DB populated with all games using a program. I made a 'Texas Universities Conference' founded in 1902 comprised of the following schools :
Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Baylor
Texas Christian
Houston
Southern Methodist
Rice
Texas-El Paso
North Texas
Texas State
UTSA
Texas-San Antonio
Lamar
Trinity Texas
Houston Baptist
Incarnate Word
Southwestern TX
St. Mary's TX

Generated the lineal championship starting with your suggested initial game. Updated the link in the OP with a new 'Texas' tab. Texas is current lineal champion after defeating Rice for the 3rd defense in the current reign. Texas has the most reigns & wins among the 'Texas' conference.

LIN,Baylor(#13(32-95))
LIN,Houston(#7(29-17))
LIN,Lamar(#1(1-2))
LIN,North Texas(#0(0-12))
LIN,Rice(#15(40-76))
LIN,Southern Methodist(#17(65-65))
LIN,Southwestern TX (#0(0-16))
LIN,Texas(#38(220-68))
LIN,Texas A&M(#22(105-78))
LIN,Texas Christian(#17(52-76))
LIN,Texas State(#1(2-2))
LIN,Texas Tech(#14(30-59))
LIN,Texas-El Paso(#0(0-3))
LIN,Trinity Texas (#1(2-9))

Check out 9/26/81. Texas State won and held until 1986. This is because Texas State is added to your 'Texas' conference because they are D1 today, but they were not D1 in 1981 and only occasionally played the other teams in your 'Texas' conference. My DB is populated with games where there is at least 1 D1 team.

Added PAC-12 ACC SEW Big 12 tabs in the OP. For ACC lineal Tennessee took the Southern conference lineal championship into SEC so started ACC lineal championship in 1953. SWC ended in 1995.

Looks like the first football game between two actual Texas colleges or universities was on October 19, 1894, when the University of Texas shut out Texas A&M (then Texas AMC) 38-0.

Awesome!

And it took us two tries to get it from Southwest Texas State, as we called them back then.

I’m pretty sure I was at both games (‘86 and ‘87), had no idea so much was at stake!!!

Coker deserved a better second opportunity than a start-up program.
