Big Ten releases 2022-25 conference football schedules
http://btn.com/2018/08/29/big-ten-releas...schedules/

Quote:The conference slate remains nine games, with the East (even years) and West (odd) rotating with five home dates. Week 1 Big Ten games will continue, as well, featuring three of them in both 2022 and 2023.

Here’s a look at the protected crossovers:

Illinois & Penn State
Indiana & Purdue
Iowa & Rutgers
Maryland & Northwestern
Michigan & Nebraska
Michigan State & Minnesota
Ohio State & Wisconsin

My guess is they stopped at 2025 because that's about the time conference realignment will create a need to redo the protected crossovers.

Illinois is Penn State's protected crossover? I thought this was based somewhat on performance. They are about the lowest on the list for rivalry purposes.

RE: Big Ten releases 2022-25 conference football schedules
Last time around they called it "parity based scheduling" and the implication at least to me and based on what they did was use their old "big 6" of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska. It appears they might be starting to move past that although they did still match up Ohio State-Wisconsin and Michigan-Nebraska.

I wouldn't read anything into the time the schedules stop. The Big Ten is the only conference to do this years in advance like this I believe and they are pretty far out there with this. Expect additional schedules in a few years regardless of if moves come or not in next decade. If realignment happens at some point, they'll simply scrap the schedules and start over (they did the same thing last two realignments).

How selections happened per the Chicago Tribune.

"The ADs decided that for the next six-year schedule block (2022-27), the annual crossovers should be randomly assigned."

“The prevailing mood,” Big Ten Associate Commissioner Mike McComiskey said, “was that the group didn’t want us picking who was going to be good that far out; you don’t know.”

"When administrators met in Rosemont for spring meetings, two jars were placed on a table and school names were pulled from each until the six new annual crossover matchups were selected."

This last paragram just blows my mind. I just find that hilarious. Ever heard of a random number generator?

Ugh that is a terrible way to pick a team you are going to play for 6 years straight.

I agree. If you aren't going to try to protect rivalries, then don't lock in one opponent. Indiana-Purdue makes sense. I can even see Michigan-Minnesota, Penn State-Nebraska. But those would be more frequent if they took away the locked opponent.
