W&M Football: Season Predictions
With W&M's football season just 10 days away (when did that happen?), we at the WMSB put together our season predictions article. We predict W&M to improve upon its 2-9 (0-8 CAA) season a year ago (shocker!), but are certainly tempering our expectations.

Either way, we predict this team to send Jimmye out on a high note. The W&M/Richmond game will be an all-time game this season for Jimmye's last at the helm in Zable Stadium. Get your tickets! #ExterminateThem

LET'S GO TRIBE.

RE: W&M Football: Season Predictions
We beat Bucknell, lose three straight to Tech, Elon, and JMU, then the offense catches up and galvanizes, and we run the table the rest of the way to finish 8-3.

Interesting email from Huge today about how the coaching search will be conducted. Have to like the prospect of actively interviewing in season, in confidence, and the possibility of having it closed/announced at season end. Important to be able to make back up recruiting ground by the second signing period. She definitely gets how critical the timing is, and has a solid advisory group.

I think Mark Duffner would make for an interesting candidate, if he desired to return home for his latter coaching years, and had some fire left in the tank after being out from under the top dog spot for awhile. His time as Holy Cross HC was outstanding. Even though he had a tougher stint as MD HC, his teams still hold many MD offensive records, so, there were some highlights there in a tough place. Money may not matter for him at this stage, and the chance to be back in the 'Burg for later retirement would be attractive.
I, also, don't think having him for a max of 5+ years should be a hinderance. Some of our young alum prospects may be in a more experienced place to step in at that point.

8-3. If so, that also means playoffs!

Love to take down Elon this year, if not, it is three losses to them in a row.

RE: W&M Football: Season Predictions
Taking down Elon would mean this team has a real chance to do something this year. Depending where you look, Elon is a preseason Top 10-15 team. JMU aside, Elon and Villanova will be the toughest tests we face. Don't be surprised if Villanova has cracked the Top 10 come November when we play them.

Ideally, I see us going 7-4, losses to VT,Elon,JMU,VU. Although if we win that Elon game the rest of the season is wide open for us in my mind.

As much as it would be a disappointment to us fans, 5-6 would surprise to the rest of the league. So I am hoping, and confident, the guys will hit that mark at least.

I hope y'all are right with 7-4 or 8-3 & I hate to be the guy not fully drinking the Kool-Aid, but man...I have a hard time finding 5 wins on the schedule for us. That said, last 2-9 season (2012) we rebounded the following year to 7-5...So who knows :)

Either way, Go Tribe!

RE: W&M Football: Season Predictions
IF the QB situation rights itself, and that's a BIG IF, then I can see 6-5, but i'm more inclined to say 4-7, when looking at it logically.

I am open to being surprised, however.

RE: W&M Football: Season Predictions
My Hopes: Healthy and improving O-line, solid running game to open up a quick-hit passing game and help our Offense gain productivity, confidence and an identity. Solid, top-ranked Defense with improved turnover production leading to improved field position for the improving Offense.
6-5 attainable and send Jimmye out into the sunset with a winning record. (prediction)
7-4 unlikely but possible.
8-3 dream come true for the Seniors and Jimmye

RE: W&M Football: Season Predictions
What I don't like is the fact that we still don't have a starting QB announced...PTSD from last year still stings, when we were in the same exact position/without an announced starter.

Wish we would have decided and run with a guy earlier in the offseason. Either way, whoever is given the keys, it would be wise for us to give him a long leash to let him develop. Let's not make this a revolving door like we did last year. It's time to stick to one of these guys long-term.

Totally agree with the long leash suggestion, we can't have a repeat of last year!

Based on the (2) scrimmages, its clear to me who the QB should be, but thankfully my opinion means absolutely nothing, and I will keep it to myself

RE: W&M Football: Season Predictions
Last year's statistical footprint:

Just a reminder- the first six columns are opposing offenses, last six are opposing defenses. W&M's numbers are matched so it's what W&M did defensively in those categories against opposing offenses and vice versa. Green means W&M did better than expected, red means worse. (I thought about shading the individual games different colors but I feel like that would make it too busy.) W&M was positive in a few more categories until playoffs/bowl season when JMU came back to earth a very tiny tick and UVA tanked against Navy. (Thanks a whole lot, Cavs!) The pass defense got worse as the season went along. Still at the end of the day this was an average team undone by a complete inability to throw the football. And this isn't exactly a one year blip:

Blue is W&M's passing efficiency, orange is the CAA. I don't know why the legend cut off but I'm on vacation and my kid's screaming so I'm not fixing it. What was once a strength of the team has been a glaring weak spot. Kevin Rogers briefly arrested the slide before Cluley suffered from a brain parasite in 2016 that made him unable to tell his teammates and defenders apart; Rogers left, JL put in his hand-picked successor and the problem got worse. It's easy to say "just run the football and play defense", but when you can't do something at an acceptable level other teams exploit it. W&M could hang for a while but eventually their inability to move the football coupled with bad special teams (32.9 yards/punt, which isn't good) would flip the field against them. Speaking of special teams, W&M was only 9-16 on FGs. You'd expect some positive regression there. Opponents were 12-17 on FGs- it's not crazy to think they might be worse there this season. Based on point differential last year W&M was a 3 win team. W&M recovered 5 of their 10 fumbles and 4 of 10 opposing fumbles so they weren't unlucky, they were just bad at football.

If you assume the defense can play close to last year it comes down to whether Mitchell can take a step towards being the answer at QB. You have to assume the Plexiglass Principle will kick in and benefit the passing game, punting and field goal units. That alone won't be enough to make them good. Until I see more it's hard to really get too excited and expect more than a 5 win season.

RE: W&M Football: Season Predictions
I don't want to be too negative here, and I might tick some people off, but I am worried about how out offense will do. I hope Shon's confidence is alright after a less-than-stellar season last year (not that the season was his fault, but I imagine it didn't make him feel too great). Combine that with a tough early schedule and I hope the team is confident enough, and in good enough help, to take control after a few games. At least they have Bucknell to try to build up some confidence, but I think that needs to be a very strong win.

I know being negative this early in the season isn't a very popular thing to do, so to be a bit more positive, if they can be 2-2 (or better) then I think we might see something like a 7-4 or 8-3.
