Exclamation SIAP Alabama State added to 2019 schedule
Like playing these in-state games. Good atmosphere with a little boost to attendance as well.

Yeah. I'd love to do home and home for pretty much any in-state d1 school. Road trips are fun and if you are going to play a low RPI team, i'd rather play a game that at least has instate bragging rights at stake versus a meaningless game from some team no one has heard of.

This is a football thread... UAB football added ASU to the 2019 slate.

RE: SIAP Alabama State added to 2019 schedule
That's the last OOC spot for football, correct?

8/29 - Alabama State
9/7 - at Akron
9/21 - South Alabama
11/2 - at Tennessee

Akron is probably the least attractive of those but Tot has build a decent program up there, making a bowl game twice in the past 3 seasons.

Tater Tot has done a nice job up there. Until we actually compete with a MAC team, I will definitely take them seriously.

I’ll ask why, so the man can say he knew this would be asked. Here’s the bait. Why do they not want fans at our games?

Well, that’s 2 straight season openers I won’t be able to attend.

So they want to play an in-state team for the attendance boost, but don't want the opposing team's fans to actually attend? Are they thinking that we'll get more Bama and Auburn fans on a Thursday night that wouldn't usually attend on a Saturday?

I will say this, though... a lot of folks plan vacations for Labor Day weekend, so maaaaaybe that is the thought? I don't know anymore. I'll just show up and hope everyone else does the same.

I get the feeling that maybe they are trying to start a tradition - 1st game on Thursday before Labor Day. Or they could be trying to gauge how such a Thursday game will draw. Maybe the Savannah State game will be a measuring stick. After all, there is still plenty of time to change the day of the game.

Hatton, and several others during our resurrection, mentioned wanting to increase midweek games. I wouldn't be so quick to blame the Thursday games all on Ingram.

I’m bringing two Alabama fans to their second UAB game ever. I’m going to continue remaining optimistic that attendance will be better than the 5k-10k numbers I see people throwing around.

They could actually make this a yearly massive "back-to-school" rally type of event with free and greatly-discounted tickets to Birmingham area school students. Always start the year with a FCS opponent; begin new fan base;etc...

You are making far too much sense.

I've got season tickets regardless, but UAB opening this season on Thursday also allowed me to go over to Atlanta for the Auburn vs. Washington game. Alabama is a bit more tricky since they're down in Orlando.

I have been having trouble getting people to come to this year's game though, and it's getting frustrating.

Personally, I don't mind the midweek games since I live in Bham. However, I think any in-state games like ASU, A A&M, Troy, USA etc. should be played on Saturday's in order to boost attendance.
