MidSouth = Kentucky

I think regionally/geographically, Kentucky is technically considered the northernmost southern state.

I think because we are parallel with WV and VA, that lumps them into the southern states as well.

Ah, that time-honored question. I've lived in three other midwestern cities and consider Louisville a midwestern city in an otherwise somewhat southern state. I do know a few consider the whole state midwestern due to being parallel with Missouri, as well as southern Indiana and southern Illinois.

Fun thread. I'm still so psyched about this ASUN move that I wish Bellarmine could go ahead and join for this coming season.

As far as potential rivalries, I could see BU having something with Lipscomb (closest conference mate/presumed travel partner), Liberty (not totally sure why -- maybe just for being another private school and a familiar name), and North Alabama (just for having joined the conference around the same time). I suppose time will tell and, for hoops at least, the biggest rival may very well be one which develops on the hardwood.

There are a group of guys (40's and up) that come to Florence every year to play golf that are from Louisville. Great guys and I asked them before what they considered Kentucky being, they say definitely South.

So I had to ask the ultimate southern question...
How many people drink sweet tea in Kentucky?

You tell me the answer.

Definitely could see a future BU/ANU rivalry developing, & I think it will happen quickly. Proximity, both making the jump from D2 to the ASUN, both having good potential to be competitive in the long run, & there seems to be some kindred spirit there that could make this fun &/or nasty between the fanbases.

Lipscomb would make sense due to proximity, but that one may take a little longer, unless there's a history I'm unfamiliar with (very much a possibility).

But for potential rivalries, some that I think has potential are

LU and LU (see what I did there)

UNA and KSU (mainly because we overlap each other in recruiting and are relatively close to each other. Also will be playing football against each other and that in itself develops rivals.)

Liberty and UNA (nothing really in common, except both joining the same conference at the same time.)

UNA and Lipscomb (have a small history in some sports with each other, and only 2 hrs separate the two schools.)

Liberty and NJIT ( the two northern most schools in the conference, really just didn't want to leave NJIT out, that's all)

Being from St. Pete originally, the one rivalry I was aware of from this conference beforehand was Stetson & Jacksonville in baseball, though it could extend out to other sports as well.

JU and Stetson have played 89 times (JU holds a 54-35 advantage) in basketball. I am very sure that is the longest running rivalry in the ASUN.

Well there you go. I was meaning that I just was aware of that particular rivalry in baseball, though it was possible it was in other sports, which you seem to have confirmed.

There could be a rivalry with UNA and Bellarmine potentially, I dont know about all sports, but I do recall both playing against each other in baseball a few times. And that's one of my favorite sports. In order Football and baseball are a tie, (nowadays you cant put softball in there) and basketball.

UNA and BU ain't that far from each other either, just a little over 4 hrs I think.

Valid question. Not yours truly, nor the wifey (I'm not a tea guy; she likes it, but just with a dash of sweetener).

You'll have to ask those golfers if they're Bellarmine Knights fans. And, if they're not, kindly instruct them to get onboard with BU.

They drink sweet tea...

I guess I should elaborate, how many restaurants have sweet tea on the menu?

By the way, I believe a couple of them graduated from BU. Dont know about the others.

As far as I’m concerned, from this fan’s perspective, Liberty rivals in the A-Sun are as follows.....
1. Lipscomb
2. FGCU
3. Bellarmine
4. North Florida

We've yet to even play Bellarmine, nor will we for at least another year...

Bellarmine as number three? Really? Over North Florida? I mean I'm glad you stated that it was your perspective, but they haven't even had a taste of playing a whole season of D1 ball. They shouldn't even be in the top 6 realistically; this is all due with no disrespect but come on now lol.

I completely understand your sentiment. But I literally grew up in Bellarmine’s backyard. So, for me, it’s natural.

RE: Potential rivalries going forward.
From my prospective, after year 1, UNA

1.KSU
2. Lipscomb
3. FGCU/UNF

KSU and UNA had some good battles

Lipscomb killed us, but they brought the fans to Florence and we took the fans to Nashville.

UNA and UNF had some good battles as well, and UNA and FGCU had similar experiences. UNF will probably pull ahead in the rivalry aspect but right now its close.

Honorable mention- NJIT.... good close games, one went into OT.

Solid picks that I could definitely see for the future of UNA. I think UNF will have a little bit more of an edge to be y'all's rivals than FGCU, as you mentioned, but both are possibilities.

I think that this conversation is totally idiotic. No one knows who the F... UNA is and developing some semblance of a rivalry with UNF is totally conjecture.

Since Liberty (and other A-Sun teams) waste their time scheduling lower division games, I wonder if anyone reached out to schedule a game with Bellarmine? Seems like it would have been a no-brainer.
