I'd drop JSU's logo to the bottom of the list, at least, if you're talking about the head-on logo with the Gamecock flying at you feet first.

I mean, on one hand, it's a really cool, aggressive logo. But it's busy as hell and gets completely washed out at smaller sizes (or viewed from a distance), becoming little more than a red blur. That's pretty much the opposite of what you want in a logo.

The other part of the official logo which really sucks is the bubble font used in the wordmarks. It's straight out of the 1990s. Not only is it dated, but much like the head-on rooster, it becomes a red smudge at a distance. It's awful.

Exactly. Liberty had this very same problem years ago with a logo that was very hard to read on their football helmets. It was cool, but there was too much going on. I like our simple LU with the eagle/flame head above.

The Jax St. logo is an awesome concept, but it is so indistiguishable when lookong at it. Too many small details that create one big..... thing.

Even though it's still currently the center piece of the basketball court itself, the "Colonel Head" logo is being phased out in favor of exclusively using the stylized "E" and "EKU" logos. There are a couple of things going on here:

1. There has been a suggesting by some that the very idea of the "Old South" Kentucky Colonel hearkens back to the antebellum mentality that included slavery. For that reason, some favor dropping the name altogether. I don't personally buy that there is a direct connection, but I'm not on this forum to get political. Rather, I just wanted to communicate the nature of the debate going on. I do think it worth noting that The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels exists to recognize distinguished Kentuckians of all demographic categories. No less a social justice force than Muhammad Ali accepted the honor.

2. However, what I think is more reasonable is the notion that if indeed the choice of the Colonel mascot is to choose an ideal to which all Kentuckians should aspire, then maybe using symbols more universal than what is obviously and specifically and old white man makes sense. For that reason, I reluctantly understand phasing out the "Colonel Head" logo itself while retaining the name (even though I thought it was a cool logo!).

Yeah, I abhor their asinnie positions, but it's most likely just a matter of time (if they haven't already) until the "wokerati" dust off their virtual pitchforks and come for both EKU's mascot and the mere name "colonel" ("it's too violent and offensive to peace-lovers!"). Heck, the bloody SJWs may very well come after Bellarmine's Knight ("the Crusades ... waah, waah"), a terrific mascot and logo which you guys underrate.

RE: Best Mascot & Best School Logo
Well, the good news is that our "Colonel" doesn't really refer to the actual military but rather the symbolic honor handed out by the state. They would come for Nicholls State before us because their logo actually involves swords.

Our powers that be seem pretty committed to keeping the name itself, although truthfully it's not as old of a mascot as most schools our age. Up until like the early 60s our teams were just known as the "Maroons" as still referenced in the lyrics to one of our fight songs, "Hail, Hail Eastern Maroons." Even the other fight song doesn't use the word Colonel at all since both of them predate the adoption of that name.

I like the name. I think it's a cool reference to something specifically Kentucky, and it's a fairly unique name (although D3 Centre College in Kentucky is still made we kind of stole it after they were already using it).

By the way UNA Lions, I suspect it's likely that we have multiple actual Kentucky Colonels roaming the stands at each of our home games...so I guess we join you in the live mascot tradition???

I do like JSU's classic profile Gamecock. But that's no longer the official athletics logo, so it doesn't count.

The other part of the official logo which really sucks is the bubble font used in the wordmarks. It's straight out of the 1990s. Not only is it dated, but much like the head-on rooster, it becomes a red smudge at a distance. It's awful.

As for the sideline mascot, I'm not a huge fan of the current incarnation of the Cocky costume, but I have to give major props to that bird. If nothing else he's got personality. I'd put him in my Top 5 on that point alone.

And I can't leave this post without addressing this...

My twisted brain put the two together, and I wound up with a vision of 2 live African lions running up and down the sidelines and through the stands.

That'd definitely put some pep in the home crowd...

I genuinely laughed out loud reading the last part 03-lmfao

RE: Best Mascot & Best School Logo
Other than North Alabama (which is ultimately cool), what ASUN school has a live mascot housed on campus?

Bellarmine Knight - impossible, unless it’s a knight mummy in a sarcophagus. Knights of Columbus don’t count. 03-lmfao
C. Ark Bear - This seems pretty possible.
EKU Colonel - see note for Bellarmine. I know, there are KY Colonels walking all over campus. 03-lmfao
FGCU Eagle - seems very possible.
Jax Dolphin - This seems very possible.
Jax St. Gamecock - This seems quite possible... no fighting! 03-lmfao
Kennesaw St. Owl - This seems very possible.
Liberty Flame - There are eternal flames on campus, but no live eagles.
Lipscomb Bison - That seems very possible if the space is there.
North Florida Osprey - This seems very possible.
Stetson Hatter - eh.....

RE: Best Mascot & Best School Logo
JSU used to have a live rooster. It didn't actually live on campus, but would be brought on gameday to a cage just outside the team's tunnel where they entered the field. You could occasionally hear it crow at random times during games.

I believe that tradition ended a few years back. (Time's flying by, so it was probably more like a decade or two.) I don't know the circumstances.

Now, there's only a recording of a rooster that they play over the PA on first downs.

Is it an animal rights thing, or a cost thing, that keeps schools from doing it?

Maybe Jacksonville St should clean up their logo—I like the idea of the logo just being a gamecocks talons. That would look crisp and clean and distinguish themselves from South Carolina and Coastal Carolina.

About 10 years ago, the university rebranded itself, replacing the traditional Gamecock logo here:

With this stylized logo:

I'm not a fan of that newer logo AT ALL.

Yes, it's much clearer, but it's not immediate clear what it's supposed to be (Gamecock feathers) and even then, once you know what it is, it's not clear what's happening. Is it running away? That's not a good look...

I like to occasionally eat the Colonel's chicken. I will say that their chicken was much better in the 80's and 90's. Of course the first time I drove through the Commonwealth of Kentucky we had to have Kentucky fried Chicken in Kentucky darn it! So we got lunch our lunch at a KFC off of I65 somewhere south of O-hi-o.

This is SO true! I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had KFC in the last decade. The quality has gone down dramatically since the 70-90’s. I’ve tried it in multiple states too. I did notice the food started getting worse as stores stopped serving their buffets and they changed the name to KFC. I do miss eating good quality Kentucky Fried Chicken though.
