Tied at the half 0-0. Tribe has more shouts on goal but can't find the net.

1-0 Tribe. Quick goal to start the second. Beautiful teamwork. No one can turn a left corner like Segan...finds her teammate waiting patiently.

Delaware jumped to a 0-1 lead rather quickly.

Watched part of the Duke-Louisville game. Duke looks like they could field a JV Womens national team. Louisville was overmatched, but still looked like theyd beat our team.

Very bad loss, losing to Delaware (who was already below us in the standings). I noticed that Sarah Segan did not play. Injured?

Thanks. A very costly red card indeed!

Bad loss (0-1), bad year! That loss to Delaware (equally as bad as we) cost us a slot in the CAA tournament. All those who raved about the Shackford hire are not validated (certainly not yet!). Last year, even with the first losing season in 34 years, Daly still got the team into the CAA tournament.

Are you seriously critiquing the coaching hire without even having a true recruiting class under her belt? I don't even follow soccer and that doesn't seem fare. I'd say year 3 would be the earliest I would even mention it. She, as a coach, has taken her teams further than we have ever gone. You need to let her build her team.

Agree 100% with MrJoolius: she was dealt the cards this season with players she inherited.

She needs her own recruiting class and, given her remarkable background, I'm hoping we may expect a group to top rated recruits as she starts getting the program back to NCAA Tip 25 level.

RE: Women's Soccer
I knew that folks would retort with the "recruiting class" angle. That might be true for basketball or even football but it is not the case here. First off, Daly retired (at least that was the official story) so it is not like he was a bad coach/recruiter who left the cupboard bare. Secondly, besides the NCAA streak of winning seasons, the Tribe reached the semifinals of the CAA tournament, what, 6 or 7 years in a row under Daly -- so there were plenty of good players already on the team (and I don't think they all just happened to graduate last year (Sarah Segan didn't)). Thirdly, if Shackford is even half as good as some folks are saying, then I think she could have coached this team to at least a CAA tournament berth, if not a winning record. Blaming it all on bad players (who were previously good enough) is a cop out.

My worry is that while we are waiting for her three years of recruits that we will fall even further behind the other teams in the league. We don't want a couple of bad years to turn into extended droughts like what happened with lacrosse and volleyball. Our soccer heritage is too proud for that and deserves better.

RE: Women's Soccer
Again, I'm not a soccer guy, but you are aware of Shackleford's accolades, right? Daly may have consistently made the CAA tourney, but Shack has coached teams onto the national stage. At Princeton "Her legacy includes six Ivy League championships, eight NCAA tournament appearances (the most by an Ivy women's soccer coach), a national Division I Coach of the Year Award, three regional Coach of the Year honors and the distinction of having won more games coaching soccer at Princeton than any coach with either the men's or women's program." She took an Ivy team to the ncaa final 4. One doesn't have that type of success without being a good recruiter. I know a lot of these accolades were some time ago, but I believe that she has earned patience. I feel sorry for Laycocks replacement if the turnaround window is that small.

Geeze.

We graduated 7 seniors and 1 player left the team prior to the 2018 season.

11 players joined the Tribe in 2018 and that doesn't include freshmen. Including true freshmen, that's 18 players who had zero experience at W&M. 18 of a 30 player roster who had not stepped foot on College grounds before August.

Of the 12 current players who were on the 2017 roster, only 6 saw significant time last year. Only two of them, Dailey and Segan, received CAA honors last year.

I don't have Daly's bio in front of me ...but I think that he (we/W&M) won at least 6 conference championships during his tenure and made the NCAA tournament at least 8 times. I don't know if he ever won national coach of the year but, either way, we all know that many times those are just popularity contests anyway. Regarding her Final 4 appearance, I simply say look at who W&M played in the first or second round seemingly every year: UNC (at UNC, of course, and all they did was win, what, 18 national championships in a row (sure seemed like that many)). So, reverse where Princeton and the Tribe played those years and maybe Daly can brag on a Final 4, too.

I never said Shackford was not a legitimate hire but I did say, last year when she was hired, to hold off on all the hyperbole until she had actually won some games. Unfortunately, she didn't win many games this year. I obviously hope she wins more next year.

Yes, losing 7 seniors is a lot - but of the 11 transfers, how many did Shackford bring in? How many of 7 freshmen did she recruit? In other words, it sounds like she had a significant say in who was on the roster (and she absolutely had ALL the say in the style of play all year).

I think that 2 returning players with CAA honors is a lot. How many did Drexel or Delaware or UNCW (the teams finishing right in front of us, two of whom beat us out of the last spots) have?

Bottom line is that I think that we can all agree that the team did not play well this year and that is on both the players and coaches. But Shackford did not start from ground zero. Hopefully next year will be better.
