Oh well. Wow did Tutolo get beat by a wrestler from Indiana. The score was only 5-0 but he was on the bottom for the entire four minutes of the 2nd and 3rd periods. He never came close to escaping. Welcome to the Big 10.

That’s always been Tutolo’s weakness; struggles to get off bottom.

RE: Wrestling 2018-2019
Lambert58/Burden,

Is Monico out for the year or does he have a minor injury he is rehabbing?

Is there any chance that Conel returns for season or has that ship sailed?

KSU went to Edinboro PA and got a team road win, 26-12. Andrassy made a comment that the intensity was as high as it's been all year.

Looks like Andrassy is very happy with the in-season progress of Berthold. Barreiro & Simpson lost close matches, while Rooney @ McNally both had pins.

Conel didn’t rule out coming back next year but he didn’t commit to it by any means. I expect he’s done. Know nothing about Monico maybe Lambert has some insight.

I think Conel is done for the year and maybe beyond. I haven’t heard anything regarding Monico’s status. I’m out of the loop now so other than what I read or see, I have limited insight. We just signed a very strong recruit; Alex Gould from Pennsylvania. His highest finish has “only” been 8th (2x) but he’s knocked off studs in convincing fashion at tournaments outside of the high school season. He’s ranked #12 in the country at his weight class this year but I think he’s a top 4. He’s very physical and has a motor. He could be very good for us.

Weird weekend in South Beach. Kent beats our new MAC member SIU Edwardsville 23-14. Beats Michigan St. 18-17 (really liked that Rooney beat our former friend Tutolo)!!! Then we lose to Missouri 44-0 and to Minnesota 51-0.

The disparity in talent between the top 10 and the other teams is huge. It’s even greater from the perspective of the top 5. PSU is so good that an all star team made up of the best wrestlers from the other schools would probably lose to PSU. Missouri is very very good even without their World Champion. Minnesota is up and coming with a FRESHMAN 285 that could win an NCAA championship. We have zero wrestlers on the level of these teams. Miller and Kilgore, along with Mitcheff and Bedelyon, are our only wrestlers that could compete with the likes of PSU and OSU. The rich get richer...

Yeah I know. It seems like it’s gotten worse over the last ten years though. The smaller sports are even worse than basketball, football. Gymnastics is the same way. You have 5 or so teams with a chance of winning and the rest compete for fun. Missouri really bothers me as they effectively have ended any chance of winning the MAC which was at least a nice consolation prize.

Did you ever make it to Hungary for the worlds? I watched most of it on the Olympic channel and it would have been great to have been there.

Lost to Old Dominion (30-10), Chattanooga (21-15) and Lock Haven (26-15). I thought last year we were improving a bit but how wrong I was. Of course losing Conel and Tutolo didn’t help much. Winter sports aren’t what they used to be.

I believe it has gotten worse, even though it shouldn’t, but it still comes down to $ and we can’t compete with the big boys without it. The changes to our coaching staff hasn’t helped us the past 5 years. We may never catch Missouri but at least we’d always win 3 or 4 matches. Nope, never made it to Hungary but like you I watched a lot of matches. I can’t wait until Nolf and Bo graduate from PSU and start competing on the international level.

Monico hasn’t wrestled either. That’s 3 starters from last year.

We landed another strong recruit - Ryan Neu, state champ from Wisconsin. This is shaping up to be one of our better classes in several years.

I watched it on tape Saturday and it’s just not very entertaining. Too many matches where we have little or no chance.

Double ugh. Lost 29-13 to Buffalo today. Won only 3 of 10 matches which seems to be the norm.

Conel salvaged our season last year. Well, at least he helped us forget how bad the team performed. Perhaps McNally will do the same this year because other than him, this is another train wreck.

Here’s a good resource that I recently found for college wrestling.

https://www.wrestlestat.com/team/36/kent-state/profile

In addition to the depth chart, the tabs for rank history and eligibility breakdown are informative.

RE: Wrestling 2018-2019
We barley avoided a DISASTER last night. CSU is much improved under Coach Moore, but we were anemic and our performance was reminiscent of the bad days under Coach Romano. Ferri, Rooney and Simpson won but did so in unimpressive fashion. The next 4 matches were awful. Komara was caught and stuck by a high school move, prompting the CSU fans and wrestlers to come alive. Then, Andrassy is pinned with :17 seconds left by a cradle that everyone but him saw coming. Crowd goes nuts. Just awful. Bast, a 5th year senior, then turns in a disinterested performance and gives up a TD with short time remaining. Crowd is now rowdy. Byland is then thrown and pinned like a rag doll. The crowd completely loses it. Ugh. But we’re good because McNally is next and is dominating his opponent. He gets too aggressive, however, and is thrown to his back. Is this really happening?! The CSU fans are beside themselves at this point and I’m thankful that I didn’t wear my KSU Wrestling shirt. McNally somehow manages to fight off of bottom to get the tech fall. Mast barely wins against a true freshman, but we are still down by 3 points despite having won 1 more match! Berthold turns in our best performance of the night with an intense pin in the 1st period, saving the night.

RE: Wrestling 2018-2019
Not good. To be honest I totally forgot they were wrestling CSU. Sounds like they forgot too. I don’t I have to believe there is more to this than KSU not having the money to attract athletes. I have to suspect Andrusky and his crew have something to do with it. Other than Missouri what other MAC schools are that attractive (maybe CMU). I know getting Kilgore’s and Millers are tough but we also used to get some NCAA qualifiers ranked 21 to 33. Where are they lately? Even they are becoming rare.
