The only way I could see a 'North/South' division working is if you ran the imaginary boundary split with the Arkansas & Louisiana borders and you would then have..
North:
Arkansas State, UALR, UTA, App State, Coastal and Georgia State
South:
Georgia Southern, ULM, Louisiana, South Al, Troy, Texas State
However, football would be SUPER funky since the West would lose both UTA and Little Rock. At that point, you'd have to push the division boundary further south inbetween ULM and Louisiana and at that point have...
North: Arkansas State, App State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, ULM
South: Georgia Southern, Louisiana, South Alabama, Texas State, Troy.
Would it make things balance currently? You could argue yes, though the present level of power could easily swing to favor a slew of different teams in the league. Also, the whole core of the restructuring of the league was for "travel partners" and that gets completely flushed down the toilet for the most part.
I think the conference is set up the way it needs to be
