I look at it the other way- they have plenty of time to figure out which direction they want to go.

Simply talking about the fact most kids are signing in December. At best we will have had a new coach for A month. More than likely much less than that.

RE: Jimmye’s Retirement
RTD article for tomorrow stated there would be a national search.

I think we all want to hit the ground running, but I imagine all of our expectations for the post Jimmye season will be reserved.

Just to get in front of it, I don't think it's insensitive to discuss his potential replacement. It's kinda a big deal.
The coaching tree is vast. Not an enviable task to follow a legend, but I'm sure there are a number of very good coaches with good feelings about their years in Williamsburg. I would think working with AD Huge would be a selling point as well. She seems like a good boss.

I want a great recruiter. In college, whether basketball or football, it's all about the talent. What's the old saying? Winning is about the Jimmys and Joes, not the X's and O's. Corley comes to mind as a recruiter, but I worry about his lack of head coaching experience. I like the Mike London call. Pair him with a competent OC and it could work. He has brought in outstanding talent at all of his stops. Pretty sure Shoop would be taking a pay cut to coach here.

I would like to thank him for everything he has done for the college. You can’t even put into words how historic it is. I hope he has a happy life in retirement. He deserves it.

Now into the replacement. I think hiring someone from inside isn’t the greatest of ideas. Corley seems like a really great fit. Or, we could reach for someone who’s Alma matter isn’t WM. There are many great coaches out there, and I wouldn’t mind giving one a chance.

I don't have a preference about who should be coach but I'll be happy if they at least interview someone who isn't part of the family already.

RE: Jimmye’s Retirement
Every Fall since I graduated in 1980, I looked forward to the football season. Every year. I felt like we had a chance every year, some years more than others. I loved the games against the big boys when the Tribe offense was clicking. Well done, JL!

I also think this announcement cements his legacy and reputation ... he avoided the Bowden / Paterno unhappy exits. Again, well done, JL!

I have every confidence that the right person will be selected to be our next coach.

Imagine this.

The AD starts with asking JL. Then the AD calls Tomlin, McDermott, and Quinn. Then the AD calls Elijah Brooks. Then the AD wraps it up with calls to Levy and Holtz.

That's a pretty good group to get a pretty good road map as to what head coach / assistant coach is out there that would be a good fit.

Of course, if any of the young 'uns mentioned above want the job, it's theirs!

:-)

Really Good call on Elijah Brooks, NJ. He has been doing a great job as Dematha High’s FB Head Coach for a while now.

I wonder if Mike Leach would ever have any coaching ambitions.

I'm not sure it would be any better if he retired at the end of the year with opposing coaches suggesting that JL is nearing the end of his tenure.

RE: Jimmye’s Retirement
Jimmye has always been a class act in every way and has brought nothing but honor and respect to his Alma Mater. He is a legend within his profession. With a 90%+ graduation rate from a tough academic university his players have found success in post-football life and, unlike many other universities, support their university in later life.

Have a great final season, Jimmye...you go out with the respect of all.

He's a little busy at Washington State, and I don't think he'd be a good fit at all...wait, wrong Mike Leach. My bad.

RE: Jimmye’s Retirement
My favorite thing about Laycock's legacy at William & Mary is the fact that he was approached at least a dozen times by larger, Power 5 Conference schools about their head coach openings. Among them, Duke, Wake Forest, Maryland and Boston College. Laycock was a very hot commodity in the national coaching ranks, especially in the 90's.

Many of you may recall that in 1990, he was offered -- and accepted -- the head coaching job at Boston College. He was making $73,000 a year and BC offered a contract to double that salary.

Here's the Washington Post article about Laycock accepting the Boston College job in 1990 ...
https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/s...3af9b8b4ff

But Laycock had a change of heart, and after a sleepless night, 24 hours later told BC that he had changed his mind and would stay in Williamsburg.

Here's an article written by David Teel of the Daily Press, which appropriately captures Laycock's affection for all things William & Mary ...

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1990...ege-jimmye

An interesting side note ... After Laycock declined, Boston College hired a young up-and-coming Offensive Coordinator from Syracuse. His name? Tom Coughlin.

A great, innovative coach and an even better person and friend. I wish him much luck for one final winning season and a retirement full of travel and beautiful golf courses.

Watched Jimmye's entire press conference on Tribe U-Tube.

What a class guy. Proud he's a W&M grad and football coach. A truly remarkable man.

RE: Jimmye’s Retirement
Had a chance to watch the press conference.

What a book he could write!

While some of us knew it all these years, and some of us took it for granted all these years, and some of you had pre-mature memory loss over the last couple of seasons, Jimmye Laycock saved W&M football, grew W&M football, and gave W&M football a solid foundation for the future.

An alum who served our alma mater with honor, commitment, and distinction ... and with his own style.

While Jimmye did not want to get nostalgic today, his comments about the state of the program when he arrived in 1980 triggered an avalanche of memories. One in particular.

October 18, 1980. Rutgers Stadium, Piscataway, New Jersey. William and Mary 21 Rutgers 18. For all of us William and Mary Jersey folks ... it was love at first sight ... we had our coach ... and his program gave us numerous wonderful Saturday afternoons and nights for the next 37 years.

Thanks JL! Best wishes for a long, healthy, and happy retirement! You leave some pretty big shoes to fill!

RE: Jimmye’s Retirement
He did a great job today. You can easily tell how much it has meant to him. Hopefully, he will have a great last year and so many of the players will get a chance to get back during the season and enjoy a moment with him and each other. I liked what he said about the success of all the players in life after football. I know a few and it is certainly true of each of them. No fan, student, or media member has ever agreed with every play call and result, but he has represented W&M well. I hope he enjoys many rounds of golf next year. I hope for many years after and that he can tailgate and vacation a lot with his family. Will miss him on the sidelines. I know that a large part of why so many of us went to the games in the 80's and 90's was the innovative fun play calling, the classes we had with team members during the week, and the spirit and effort the team played with. 2004 was an amazing run that ultimately led to lights at the stadium, night games, and the Laycock Center. Zable is now a very nice facility for the coaches, players and fans. Lots of great weekends at the College surrounded by a fun, exciting football afternoon in the fall. But the quality of the students and the staff is a lasting legacy for Coach. Lots of really successful people that he had a significant part in their development. Thank you Coach.

Let's just hope it's a fun/rewarding year for Jimmye and the team, regardess of wins and losses. Doubt many players in the past 38 seasons got to see the side Jimmye showed this morning. Hopefully a lot of added motivation for this group.

There will be a new head coach in the future.

There will only ever be one "Coach".

Thank you for everything, Coach.

Based on the relatively few replies to this thread for such a major shakeup, this announcement seems to have been a long time coming and something most expected sooner or later. Lets hope he has a final season to remember!

RE: Jimmye’s Retirement
Reminds me of when Kevin Rogers retired. End of contract, age, etc. Lot's of assumptions could be made, but that's not what's important right now. Time to have a proper send off and celebrate what JL has accomplished. He was definitely emotional in his presser. Let's hope that translates into a great season where the team is behind him 110%
