Say you were going to go way out on a limb and project the top two candidates for the W&M job when Jimmye Laycock retires after 2018. Mississippi State DC Bob Shoop (51, ex-W&M DC) and Penn State WR coach David Corley (38, ex-W&M QB) have Tribe ties. Both very well-respected.

Corley seems like a realistic option. P5 position coach to FCS head coach is reasonable. Plus, he's an alum.

Shoop might be hard to get. P5 coordinator is equal to better than an FCS head coach, and I believe he makes over a million dollars a season with Mississippi State. I don't think the Tribe connection is strong enough to warrant a huge salary drop - Jimmye makes under 300k, and even if we reason we can go closer to 400k for a new coach, that's a huge reduction.

That assumes the schools listed above will be FBS in 10 years. I think what is currently the FBS will split in two. 60-70 teams will form a top tier and get the big bucks, playing only amongst themselves. It will be essentially a semi-pro league.

I don’t expect ANY of the schools you list to be in that tier. (And, yes, I don’t expect UVa to make the cut.) At that point, the financial realities of higher education will force them to adopt something much like the current FCS model. We can opt to join up with them at that time, without the decade of spending precious coin of the realm to chase an impossible dream.

If there is a split, it'll be P5/G5. Duke, UVA, and Wake would all make it easily.

Matching Al would be John Daly who guided the Tribe to 22 NCAA tournament appearances, including 18 of the past 25 years. Daly coached the side in 646 matches, amassing a record of 413-176-57 (.683) overall and a mark of 156-45-18 (.753) in the Colonial Athletic Association. He guided the team to a remarkable 30 consecutive winning seasons from 1987 though 2016.

Jimmye’s Retirement
Huge sent a nice email. Glad she is consulting people who love the Tribe.

Dear Tribe Faithful:

As most of you know, Coach Laycock recently announced that he will retire at the end of this football season after 39 years on our sidelines. Though his legacy will live on in perpetuity through the lives of the young men he coached, we owe it to Coach, his staff and the student-athletes to keep our focus on this season. The best way to honor Coach Laycock is to come out and support the Tribe in 2018.

With that in mind, I write now, while we are still in the preseason, to briefly share with you how we will identify, recruit and select the next head coach of William & Mary Football.

During the search process, I will consult an informal group of advisors, all of whom are passionate about W&M and are Tribe Football alumni: Joe Montgomery ’74, Kevin Rogers ’74, Todd Stottlemyer ’85, Shawn Knight ’94, Kendrick Ashton ’98 and Mike Leach ’00. These alums will serve in an advisory role, providing advice and knowledge gained from their experiences as students, coaches and athletes here at William & Mary and also in their professional careers after graduation. Broader input from the many successful alumni in the professional and college coaching ranks will also be sought, and President Rowe will, of course, meet with select finalists.

Our search will be comprehensive and inclusive, but cannot be conducted effectively in the public domain. Therefore, this will be the only communication related to the search until the new coach is in place. In order to attract an exceptional pool, it’s critical to protect the confidentiality of potential candidates. We don’t anticipate an announcement during the season, and I ask for your patience during the process.

If you would like to share any thoughts regarding the search, please email us at tribefbcoach@wm.edu.

Again, while I will be working intensely to identify the next leader of our football program, I encourage our alumni, friends and fans to focus on supporting Coach Laycock and this year’s team as they pursue excellence.

Enjoy the remainder of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you soon in Williamsburg.

Go Tribe!

That is a great letter. Addresses most (all?) major concerns about the new search, sets expectations for the season, and explains why there won't be more official statements until the search is over. Clear and concise.

Chance to coach his son, if his son came with him. Very long shot, but maybe not as much out of the question as we think. Comments at end of video included in the article below, speculated about Tomlin stepping down at the end of his Steelers contract. He and Jimmye did have conversations this summer.

"Last year, Tomlin, during an interview with Tony Dungy, said that where his sons play college football could have an impact on his future as Pittsburgh's head coach. A family man, Tomlin admitted that not being able to watch his sons play college football in person would be difficult."

Could you imagine the uptick in recruiting that would happen if, for whatever reason, Tomlin took over at W&M? Popular coach that is a household name nationally. Money and trying to move up in the coaching profession isn't the motivator. Strictly love for alma mater and wanting to coach his son. It's nice to dream.

If money and climbing the coaching ladder aren't goals-- a lifetime coaching appointment at you and your wife's alma mater watching your son follow in your foot steps near friends and family in your hometown. That's almost priceless. I agree, it probably ain't happening. However the timing and all around circumstances make it an interesting discussion.

If you don't care about the media response and wanted something different, it could happen. I wouldn't expect a call to be made to him, but if he were to express interest....... To the outside world, it would be crazy, but home is a special call for people.

Timing would have to be perfect. But, it is a dream scenario only I think. Would be great to get someone that either coached with Coach or played for him though. Right now, I am just hoping Coach has a great final season and enjoys every minute of it. Just have an odd feeling that this season is going to surprise all of us.

Interesting that Bob Shoop started following a few Tribe related twitter accounts. Incredulous to me the kind of money being thrown out as a defensive coordinator.
