Even if not, it wasn't one that had a drive through.

It's now in the bottom of one of those mid-rise apt. complexes on 19th St. Still no drive-thru.

Regarding drive thrus -- Some years ago there was a fast food brand (Chick-Fil-A?) that wanted to open an outlet at 5 Points South with a drive thru but was blocked by some sort of zoning ordinance on drive thrus where they wanted to build. I don't recall the details, but they built elsewhere. Perhaps Milo's ran into the same problem.

The Milo's on Southside has been there way, way longer than the Chick-fil-a at Five Points. It's been in the bottom of the apartments across from UAB Hospital since I can remember, at the very least the early 00s.

Chick-fil-a wanted a drive thru at their new location at Five Points South but was denied the drive thru. They still opened in the originally desired location, though, in 2011.

Sometimes in dense urban environments you can't have drive thrus. Milo's couldn't, there's no room in that building. Chick Fil A could've squeezed one in but it violated zoning regulations. Two different situations.

I'm showing my age 03-old but I recall in the early to mid eighties Milos was located on the east side of 20th street where the Kirkland Clinic parking lot is now located. Before that I believe it was an H. Salt Fish and Chips. How about that for a derailment?

I'll see your age and raise it to the late 50s when I took my lunch break from my summer job at my dad's foundry (1006 37th Place North) to go to the original Milo's location on 10th Ave North. You drove by the east side window to place your order and then drove up the hill to turn around and came by the west side window to pick it up. BTW, while working toward my MA in 1970-72, I bought hotdogs from the original "Sneaky Pete" on 8th Ave South before he sold out to the franchiser. Did you ever eat at "PJ's" (for Pat James, former Bama coach under Bryant) on 20th Street before he sold it and used the money to start the original "Full Moon BBQ" on 6th Ave South?

From Milo's to Sneaky Pete's to Jack's - we have had some pretty good start ups of fast food places.

And Hamburger Heaven! Right across the street from the original Jack's (I'm thinking Jack was kind of bitter).

Gene Bartow, blessed be his name, introduced me to Hamburger Heaven. They stocked orange juice just for him.

Actually Jack also started Hamburger Heaven after he sold the Jack's brand. The original building was an old burger and ice cream place before Jack bought it. That place was damaged in a fire a few years later. He refit it and a couple years later, it burned down completely. That is why it is in the current location. I grew up across the road from the place.

Jack Caddell (sp?) sold his original chain of Jack's to a franchiser and had agreed to a "noncompete clause" for several years. When it expired, he created Hamburger Heaven on US 78 in Irondale. After Jack's death, his family sold that new brand chain to a franchiser. That makes two successful burger chains from one creative person.

In the late 90s, there was a Milos where North Pavillion sits now.
