RE: "Reinvigorated" Mark & Brand Coming on Wednesday
Personally, I prefer the straight "W&M" because it's got a retro vibe that appeals to me. The griffin alone to me isn't a bad concept, but I can't imagine that ever being on a uniform or helmet because it's entirely too busy/detailed. The mixed version seems okay, but I prefer something a little more streamlined.

Now that we've established that none of use agree, let's go out and buy all the merchandise.

So, yeah.

Exactly. I applaud the group for getting this done. It was needed and provides the department with a wider ranger of logos to strengthen branding efforts. Still unsure on a couple of the designs, but it'll work itself out...I hope.

Good work & Go Tribe.

Adding a vertical Tribe running front to back down the middle of the helmet to resemble a fierce mohawk and I'm all in.

Okay, so we got to vote on the mascot deal but not the logo. Doesn't make sense to exclude the folks who purchase merchandise, buy tickets, and otherwise support Tribe Athletics. This will do nothing to "brand" the school. A "W" and an "M" does nothing for marketing. Why get that much more confusing? Stick with the school name spelled out within the logo.

RE: "Reinvigorated" Mark & Brand Coming on Wednesday
I think everyone who reads this message board are very bright folks and it seems each of us probably thinks we could have done a better job, perhaps on a certain aspect of the re-design, here or there. As I try to more closely understand the process that Huge underwent, I am encouraged by the fact that this wasn't done by some outside creative agency. The project was spearheaded by Justin Schoonmaker, creative director of William & Mary’s University Communications group. Schoonmaker was valedictorian of William & Mary's class of 2009. This is a guy who "gets it".

In the press release, Schoonmaker states, "I have a huge stake here, because I’m an alumnus and I work here. I care a lot about what happens with the athletics program and what happens with the university’s brand over the next 10 years,” he said. “I care that our messages get out there clearly. I care about people recognizing the excellence that’s here, and I care that our song gets sung and that we have a say in it, and it’s not just other people dictating what it sounds like.”

According to the release, the re-design process went like this:
Schoonmaker, lead designer Melissa Payne, and their team spent hundreds of hours planning, sketching, revising and adapting various logos and marks. They received feedback from coaches, athletics staff, student-athletes, and university administrators over the course of several months before finally settling on the new logos.

Again, I like that process much more than Madison Avenue creative agency types handling the project.

This could have been done so much better. The Griffin they created looks blobby and elderly (325 years old?). There are many better versions to use in a similar manner. Why not use a more traditional Heraldic pose to connote our stature as an ancient college of the Americas?

If the goal is to get W&M brand out there, why blend the ampersand into the letters? Its not very clear what the logo says to the untrained eye.

I support the people, the institution, and the vision. This logo does not change any of those factors in a negative way, so I'm as excited to support W&M today as I was yesterday.

So, yeah.

For those in the "hate it all" camp, maybe a few beverages at the Tribe Tavern will make you forget. So it's a win/win.

I think the conversation in an elevator in Chapel Hill is simply an example...not the whole story. And the adage of you have to spend money to make money comes to mind. I like the new logo. Not keen on the griffon but it will grow on me I’m sure. I feel like it is a good move. I just hope we don’t shoestring the implementation.

It's better than the last big logo redesign. That's a really, really low bar, though. I didn't like a lot of the images, but I think the helmet looks good. Those colors make up for a lot of design.

You wouldn't think it was that hard to make a 'W' that looked more like a 'W' than an upside-down 'M', but apparently you'd be wrong.

Who is missing from the above list of contributors (and who, numerically, make up a much much larger contingent)? That's right: alumni.

My thoughts:

1. I agree with Tribal that the new logo looks worst on the football helmet.

2. I think the first griffin shown on Nogretheogre's post looks the best.

3. I never liked the script "Tribe" as a logo. Probably because we were still the Indians when I was there. I don't mind being called the Tribe, I just have never liked the script as a logo.

4. In Mr. J's post above (#27) the full logo shows a yellow tail. However, on the official post (and copied in Billymac's post # 29), the tail is brown (like a lion). Which is actually correct? This may seem trivial but there is actually a huge difference between the yellow and brown. The yellow tail makes it look like the tail belongs to the W&M (which is also yellow) whereas the brown clearly separates the tail from the W&M. The tail is also why I don't like the full logo -- because the tail is all you see from the lion, whereas you get the full head of the eagle. It is bad enough that a lot of uninformed TV announcers already think that our mascot is an eagle. The full logo will lead to the same confusion.

I won't be buying up the previous merchandise because I am still wearing the previous previous merchandise (featuring W&M with two feathers attached --- NJ Alum would be pleased).

Check out the new look for the floor at Kaplan including the new logo at midcourt, griffin on each baseline and the GoTribe phrasing:

I really like the look of it on the helmet. I'd like it bigger and a bit lower down the side but I think it looks great.

I think it's worth considering a HUGE contingency here. Teenagers. A lot of what we like on this board is not going to sell well with them. This design will certainly sell better than our current design or many designs that us fuddy duddies would like.

I'm ok with that. Will give credit for the W&M logo repping the same regardless of which side of the court a TV camera is shooting from.

Current styles of teenagers is early 90s. This is not early 90s. Think mom jeans, fanny packs etc. urbanoutfitters.com for reference

I just hope the bookstore can make some of this look good on a tshirt...they have been pretty piss-poor in the past.

Kaplan logo looks pretty good. Something about that particular version of the logo on a light-colored background works. The rest, meh.

RE: "Reinvigorated" Mark & Brand Coming on Wednesday
Personally not a fan at all. Like a lot of people I don't like the look - it somehow manages to look too busy but also too cartoonish. More importantly though, I feel like we have too many logos. If we want recognition we need to keep it to just a few. It's already confusing that we used to be called the Indians, then the Tribe, but our mascot is a Griffin, and then the logo changed from feathers to no feathers, then we have a cypher, a normal logo, and now this new one. I agree with the idea that we need the full name out there for marketing purposes and brand building, not just W&M. But surely having like three or four different looking W&Ms out there makes it even less viable.

For what it is worth, it is being received poorly by the student body.

Edit: I also feel the ampersand is unusual looking enough to potentially be mistaken for an E, especially if see quickly during a game.

Edit again: The new logos are being widely mocked by the study body, including comparisons to high school logos, and comparisons of the Griffin's body to a chicken wing. It has become a bit of a meme already.

Tribe is being deemphasized from what I can tell from the logos. Maybe it's time to change the nickname to the Griffen. I wonder if that's next.

I actually like all of it. Change is good.
