NYT: Trump Co-opted Libertarianism
Quote:In this account Trumpism, with its tariffs and walls and family-separating cruelties, is simply a rejection of the politics of liberty, an anti-libertarian moment. But there’s also a different story, in which Trump didn’t as much defeat Rand Paul’s worldview as co-opt its more effective messages

RE: NYT: Trump Co-opted Libertarianism
lmao at libertarians....
I think this was my fave.....do the due if you don't know his background.....
Quote:Plenty of attendees were fiercely #NeverTrump and regarded him as an enemy of their ideals. But there were also plenty of people, like one of my sparring partners, former Libertarian Party V.P. nominee Wayne Allyn Root, ready to defend Trump with a true believer’s gusto.
it's too funny to me how people get attached to branding and ignore substance......then they find substance and get attached to that branding......

They look like such idiots when they talk about something outside their area of expertise, which is limited to the Acela Corridor and liberal politics.

RE: NYT: Trump Co-opted Libertarianism
The author, Ross Douthat, is one of the house-broken, sorta-kinda semi-conservatives that the NYTimes publishes every now and then. It’s a tradition that goes back to Wiliiam Safire, although he was a raging right-wing fanatic compared to his successors.
While Douthat is not particularly conservative or libertarian himself, he at least makes a good-faith effort to try and understand people who are, and to present their beliefs and arguments in a neutral light. Something which very few of his colleagues at the NYTimes have ever shown the slightest interest in doing. I find his columns to be generally worth reading, although I do disagree with him here.
Trump has neither crushed libertarianism nor co-opted it. He has simply cherry-picked a few of the more mainstream-ish elements of the overall Libertarian playbook and adapted/diluted them for consumption by a general, non-Libertarian audience.

the fruit was on the ground.....he could've played it a variety of ways.....
I still drive to how embedded so many are within their labeling and can't open the window to gather a breeze of fresh....that's what I truly find sad on all fronts....
