Yall really gonna debate about your country singers? I get that old people and "purists" don't care for this new wave of singers and I can see why, but they have some catchy stuff. I'm not afraid to admit I like some of the guys yall mentioned stuff.

But when it all comes down to it we have George Strait....

It's the off season of the only college sport most of us care about. Of course we're going to belittle and berate one another over absolute bull feces.

It's not so much that I am "purist" but my beef with what is dominating today is:
- Sounds like it was a product of an algorithm rather than sincere song writing.
- There is no depth to the lyrics. Rural America is in bad shape, not Great Depression bad, but at least as bad the 1950's migration when farm automation shrunk many towns and killed a few towns. The market ought to be ripe for some meaningful songs.
- I tend to suspect both are a product of corporations demanding inoffensive gunk that they can make money off today, who gives a crap if anyone cares to listen to it next year because there is a new song to sell then.

Not sure if any of yall are familiar with Texas Country. While of course tons of people here enjoy Nashville stuff, there are some "Texas Country Only" people here because to them it's "real country". Obviously it's debatable. I enjoy both genres and maybe enjoy Texas Country a bit more but a lot of great Texas Country songs sound more like rock than country. It's good stuff though.

I'm familiar. Robert. Earl. Keen.

The most important thing we need to take away from this discussion is that the banjo should not be used as a representative of the bastardized country music heard on modern airwaves. Clean up air pollution, play bluegrass music.

I'm kind of one of those "Texas Country Only" people. I've never been a huge fan of country music in general, but I find the Nashville Pop Country completely unlistenable. It makes my skin crawl. I can dig some Texas Country though. REK is the man.
