PHILADELPHIA, PA –  July 9, 2018 – Entercom, the unrivaled leader in sports radio, today announced a new exclusive broadcast partnership with Georgia State University. As part of the agreement, 92.9 THE GAME (WZGC-FM) and News & Talk 1380 (WAOK-AM) in Atlanta will broadcast all Georgia State University Athletics football, men’s and women’s basketball games. The partnership is effective at the start of the 2018-19 season.
“Expanding our sports contents is an important part of our strategy to remain as the leaders in sports radio,” said Rick Caffey, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, Entercom Atlanta. “We remain strong advocates of our local community and of delivering quality content to our city and beyond. This agreement with Georgia State University is another step in that direction and we look forward to an exciting season with an excellent sports program.”
“We are pleased to join the Entercom team as a new avenue to provide more game coverage and market our teams throughout the metro Atlanta area,” said Charlie Cobb, Director of Athletics, Georgia State University. “This agreement offers us more promotional exposure while working with the leader in the Atlanta sports market.”
All football games will air on 92.9 THE GAME. News & Talk 1380 (WAOK-AM), the team’s ancillary broadcast outlet, will provide game coverage of select matchups. The news station will broadcast all men’s basketball games. All women’s basketball games will air on WSTR HD2.
As part of the partnership, 92.9 THE GAME will also host weekly interviews with Georgia State football coach Shawn Elliott on “Mornings with John and Hugh,” weekdays from 6:00 a.m. ET to 10:00 a.m. ET. Men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter will join “Dukes and Bell” in a weekly interview on weekdays from 2:00 p.m. ET to 7:00 p.m. ET.
The partnership between Entercom and Georgia State University was facilitated by Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment, a sports marketing and media sales organization.
Listeners can tune in to 92.9 THE GAME (WZGC-FM) in Atlanta on-air, as well as nationwide on the Radio.com app. Fans can also connect with the station on social media via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
92.9 THE GAME is a part of Entercom, a leading American media and entertainment company and one of the two largest radio broadcasters in the country.

This is huge! Not only for Georgia State, but the Sun Belt in Atlanta. This is the most powerful sports talk signal in the metro. We got this while Tech is on 1230 the Fan 2. Huge deal.

I would think most likely Brandon would stay at Dickey Broadcasting, because he probably has a noncompete which means he couldn't move over. It sucks if it does, but it would be nice to have an advocate on the other side.

Call it The Fan 2 or Sports X, whichever. Which coverage map would you rather have your games on and talking about your team?

I'm sure he does. I'm just not sure how that all works. Definitely looks bigger. I'm not a fan of the 92.9's app. It's normally my only way to listen to the Falcons pre game.

So is that the only station that will broadcast games? No deals with other Georgia Stations to get more statewide coverage?

Better than 65% of the population of the state is covered by their signal.

I didn't pay attention to this part of the announcement previously:

"As part of the partnership, 92.9 THE GAME will also host weekly interviews with Georgia State football coach Shawn Elliott on “Mornings with John and Hugh,” weekdays from 6:00 a.m. ET to 10:00 a.m. ET. Men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter will join “Dukes and Bell” in a weekly interview on weekdays from 2:00 p.m. ET to 7:00 p.m. ET."

We do

Two in Atlanta, one not far from it, and another way up in the blue ridge region. That's not a radio network.

You've got a major Atlanta station with a big reach and that's good but This is a radio network. 04-cheers

And on a more serious note, both Southern and State need to have radio presence in Augusta.

We both hit our objectives. Just two different ways to go about it. You guys cover Macon and into south GA well. We cover north of it.

Uh... Yeah... That's a lot of stations, but they reach a smaller population than our network... More than half the population of Georgia lives in the counties surrounding Atlanta, and you cover almost none of that.

Yeah, I'd rather have a network covering twice the population where the flagship is one of the most powerful sports talk signals in the SE (maybe the most) so people only have to remember one frequency. But I guess it's cool that they have, like, the second-most popular country station in the Waycross market that's part of theirs.

Georgia Southern's network would be better if they could get access to the Atlanta area. Otherwise GSU reaches more people, though perhaps not a wider area.

I understand how difficult it is though. It took AState a lengthy amount of time to get a consistent affiliate to pick up Little Rock and its surrounding counties. Had to find a station that was friendly and willing to pick something up in direct competition with the team in the Northwest part of the state.

RE: Entercom and Georgia State University Athletics Announce New Broadcast Partnership
When it comes to terrestrial radio, the schools in big markets are at a big disadvantage. Radio stations consider carrying those schools to be dead weight.

They don't play football, but UTA runs into this problem. They've got someone to carry their basketball, but wind up doing just some internet broadcasts for other sports because no one wants to carry sports like baseball.

AState has a great radio network, numbers wise, but as mentioned above, they have a tough time having a consistent affiliate in LR. THe Cajuns are fortunate in that the have an FM station in Lafayette which sends a city quality signal into Baton Rouge. They have affiliates in NO and Shreveport, but it's difficult to get those markets to carry an entire schedule.
