The fact that people on these boards don't understand that they are being recruited by dozens of schools and that any one of them isn't a top priority boggles my mind. The fact that people think that there is a problem with them not knowing the difference in W&M being a college or university just screams elitism and snobbery. BTW, many of these new recruits are from places like Texas and California. W&M isn't even on their radar and most people in the general population from these geographies have no idea that it is even a college.

(12-26-2018 11:18 AM)mrjoolius Wrote:  Sure, it would be great if these kids took time to research the college that offered them. These are 15-17 year old kids from PA, FL, TX, and NJ that, until just recently offered, probably had never even heard of William and Mary.

My being bothered by a recruit's not even knowing the true name of the school is NOT "elitism and snobbery". Here are my responses to the comments highlighted above:

There is nothing wrong with a kid wanting to play football. There is nothing wrong with an athlete wanting to use a football scholarship in order to get a great education and a diploma. But if all you want to do is play football -- then W&M is not the school for you. It is not a pipeline to the NFL (sure, W&M has had great players in the NFL but NONE of those players matriculated at W&M in order to get to the pros). It is not the way to be seen on TV. It is not even the place if you are really big into winning. But it IS a place to get a great education while still playing respectable football at the Division I level.

What "boggles my mind" is that someone thinks that picking a school, knowing all about that school, and deciding that school has what he wants and fulfills his educational requirements should not be a recruit's top priority. Picking a school just for football -- if that school is W&M -- is the sure way to fail out or transfer because you can't hack the academic rigor. Being more knowledgeable about the school should be even more important to those students from the far away states, because they have to leave home, their comfort zone (more homesickness) and they will have even less familial support -- so learn about the school to make sure it is the best fit for you.

So, again, it is not elitism and snobbery to be bothered that it appears that these kids are not doing their due diligence on researching W&M. Such lack of attention will not bode well for their projected success in the classroom.

Billymac -- in addition to your comments, I simply add that it has been a LOT more recently than 30-35 years ago that folks wanted to change the name of the college. Ex-President Reveley himself was big into trying to change the name. He actually succeeded somewhat, to the extent that such things as highway signs now say just "William and Mary" whereas before they said "College of William and Mary". Reveley is probably loving it that these kids are calling it William and Mary University.

RE: 2020 Football Recruiting
Zorch, I think you are reading a lot into the posts that you quoted. This is a recruiting 2020 thread. These kids aren't recruiting us, we are recruiting them. They are excited to tweet out their offers. They are juniors in high school and many haven't even taken their SATs yet. The good ones will get 10-20 offers or more. At some point they will decide what schools to weed out and which ones to visit. After the visit they should have a real good idea about what type of school William and Mary is and whether it makes sense for them. At that point it would be bad for them to butcher our name, etc. Until then we are just one of many teams that are recruiting them and as much as it may not be what we want to hear, we may only be an envelope in a stack to them. So whether it is elitism or snobbery or something else, I think the expectations for these 16 year old kids is mighty high in some minds.

They finally got it right, but it changed to various incorrect things over the course of the first 5-10 minutes of gametime.

I've seen the "WMU" on a TV broadcast, but I also believe the "stat tracker" feature on our very own Tribe Athletics website was using the WMU abbreviation during the last game I followed online.

True, THIS is a 2020 thread -- but I have seen the same comments/tweets from 2019 kids, some of whom have already signed letters of intent. So I think it is valid. I also don't think that it is too much to ask a 16 or 17 year old kid to have his act together. I was accepted early decision to W&M at 16 and was already attending at 17. Why do some many posters have such little expectations of HS juniors and seniors?

Right, and we are talking about JMU on a dated UVA thread. These forums rarely stay on track.

I think points were made. I can't imagine a scenario where I'd screw up the name of the school that offered me and write that on social media, but whatever. Sentence structure, grammar, spelling, accuracy, and citing sources won't matter until they start classes at William Washington U.

Georgia Tech had a top[ basketball signee from NY City about 20 years ago or so that was introduced at a big signing deal in Atlanta and thanked everyone for the opportunity to play at GEORGIA! Believe his first name was Kenny.

Not familiar with the story, but that would be Kenny Anderson. He was the number 1 ranked PG in the country coming out of high school.

Played for Archbishop Molloy under legendary coach Jack Curran. Same high school that Chase Audige attended prior to transferring to The Hill School.

Tribe offer Elijah Williams, 6'5, 220 QB from Oklahoma. He previously "liked" Pressley's tweet about W&M offering him. Package deal?

Tribe offered Myles Wooten 6'0, 185 ATH from a prep school in Oklahoma City.

We are his first 1A offer. Appears to be fast with excellent change of direction. +10 recruitment points for referring to us as The College of William and Mary. +10 more for following me because I liked his post.

I want to say I am blessed and beyond excited to have received my first Division 1 offer from The College of William & Mary. #GoTribe @BrennanMarion4 https://t.co/rjaEAIGycR

RE: 2020 Football Recruiting
Tribe offer QB/WR/DB Landry Kinne 6'1 180lbs Waco, TX. It is his 1st offer. Coaches son. His brother Gary Kinne Jr. played for Tulsa and had a cup of coffee with the Eagles and the CFL. I believe both Kinne and Marion were with Tulsa in 2008, so there could be a connection. Kinne is now an assistant at Arkansas.

Remarkable tidbit about his dad that I found reading up on Landry. "(Gary) Kinne made national headlines in 2005 as the head coach at Canton when he was shot in the chest by a disgruntled parent. Kinne recovered in time to return to the sidelines five months later, and he later served as an assistant at Baylor, where he played linebacker in college."

Wow.

His dad, also, stepped down (or was removed) as an asst coach for his HS team this year, midway through the season, after his son was replaced as starting QB......Texas HS football is a different world!!
