RE: 2020 Football Recruiting
Staff seems to have filled the needs pretty well. Needed numbers on the defensive front. The kid from SC is probably big enough to plug in right away. Will still need a transfer to go along with redshirt from this year. Couple of edge guys that look promising. A QB and a RB. We had lots of redshirted OL this year and a lot coming back so Grant has time to gain weight. Couple WRs with some speed. Needed a TE. Hope he can gain some weight quickly. Losing Riley was a tough loss. We still need some cover guys.

Don't forget that Christ is moving over to defense. He should plug into Gavin Johnson's slot.

I know Tyler Crist is a good addition. But, I had no idea we had the messiah moving over to our defense.

True, but he's still the best fullback in the league so who knows if he's on D full time. Either way, Brown started using to stand up guys (usually Crist and Johnson) on definite passing downs late in the year. So, if Crist replaces Johnson, someone is going to replace...Crist.

What i would LOVE to see is, if we are really going to run a 3-4, to actually run a 3-4. Three down linemen and two edge guys that they sometimes bring, sometimes bring one, sometimes drop both. Press at the corners and let 3,4,5 guys go at the QB. But we shall see if this will turn into the aggressive defense we expected.

Lots of options available outside. Isaiah Jones blossomed late in the year and was playing at all conference level. Gage Herdman should be healthy and can play anywhere in the mid-range of the defense. Marteise Phipps showed well at times and should be bigger and stronger which was his biggest need. Jack Erwin can also play on the outside as can Kevin Jarrell. Redshirted guys to watch are Drew Babcock and Brayden Staib. Lightly used guys who hold some promise are Tyler Tedeschi, Trey Zgombic and Riley Fox. Some of these undoubtedly play inside (Erwin, Jarrell and Fox) but there are options available.

I don't disagree with Jones at all as one of the main options if we play a 3-4. Not sure of him as a cover guy in last year's scheme though. He had a gigantic game filling in for an injured Arman Jones but he was put in a completely different role than Jones was in all year. Doubtful we could get away with that long term now that he's on film playing downhill all game. That position will have to cover...Arman even covered WRs in that position last year. Either way, there's no shortage of athletes and pieces right now. i love it! Just need some more big boys.

This guy Jones really got my attention late in the year. He absolutely needs to start. Herdman always plays well --- when he is healthy enough to be in there.

As I hoped, looks like we are still going after some of these euro prospects.
French WR Bryan David Alloun was by campus for a visit. 5'11 185lbs, Uber quick and athletic. Nice option as a slot type receiver. Played for a NY juco this season, I believe.

Mayo is projected to play WR with a chance at RB. Yeah, sounds like a Yoder type...we can only hope.

Bryan Alloun spent last season at ASA junior college and he looks good enough that his football career in the states could extend on some level. He was one of the most polished receivers there and his 4.11 shuttle time points to some good slot quickness.

Wait. What the...

He either isn't talented enough to play for us or we really dropped the ball.

Excited to announce that I have been accepted into Columbia University, and will be joining the football program @ColumbiaLionsFB. Thank you to all of the coaches who reached out during this recruiting process.

It's gotta be the former. At least I hope it is. We should certainly be able to out-recruit one of the worst D1 schools in the country.

If the 4.11 time is legit, it would have put him as one of the quickest WO at the last NFL combine.

IMO, there wasn't a spot for him. He's a 5'9 160lb WR/DB/Ath. They already have signings from Rose (6'2 190lb) at WR and Mayo (5'11 185lb) as an Ath. The coaches have shown that they want to go bigger at DB. He would get abused by the 185lb plus receivers in the CAA. I'm sure there might have been a PWO spot available, but perhaps Columbia offered a larger chance to contribute.

Terrible take.

Trey Reed was 5'8, 160 and he was not only a multiple time All-CAA DB, but he was also a team captain.

I'm not saying that size can't compete. I'm saying it isn't optimal.

They need to recruit their big board. If they have offers out on DBs they want more, then they aren't pushing to sign Mason. Nor should they. The problem is if they viewed Mason as a priority signing and he went elsewhere. I don't think that was the case.

RE: 2020 Football Recruiting
If you follow Mason Tomlin's twitter posts, he has been seriously into making and producing rap/hip hop music for quite awhile. Columbia's music program and NYC put him in the middle of opportunities to pursue that passion and its hybrids unlike anything W&M could offer. Even their engineering program has a tie-in with their music department, plus they have a joint program with Julliard. Would imagine that drove his choice more than football. Good for him.
