I would imagine it's like it is here: when you work under an elected official you serve at that official's pleasure.

eh, its a dick move, one that will likely bite the old sheriff in the ass at some point in time. Especially if he believes that after january he can cruise through town at 15mph over the speed limit like he does now.

If you challenge your boss and lose in almost any profession, you won't survive in the organization.

I don't know if that's ever happened around me, but I know my home county had a big issue with the Sheriff and his deputies who didn't stay in pocket. The Sheriff finally lost after 30-some years to a highway patrolman, so the reign of terror ended. Now one of the old Sheriff's guys is running. Hopefully he doesn't get it.

Crossing someone in smalltown politics is the worse thing you can do. That's how you end up being the only person who doesn't get their trash picked up or getting stopped every time you head downtown. It gets personal.

It honestly happens all the time. When you serve under an elected official you live and die by the election cycle and you always keep an eye open for a soft landing spot because if your current boss is replaced you are not assured of having a job. A lot of times the entire command staff is either terminated or demoted. There's been plenty of cases I know of where deputies who backed candidates against the sitting sheriff have been terminated.

I do question the wisdom of the thought process behind a serving deputy running against his boss though.

The deputy challenge his boss and won the election but doesn't take over till Jan.

I said "if you lose". Point being that either way, win or lose, he wasn't going to be a deputy there any longer.

The key is to work your way up through a municipal department and then run for Sheriff.

Or develop into the eminence grise to a retiring popular Sheriff.

Pretty obviously, there's some kind of back story here.
