Most are D2 and D3, while some are NAIA or Independent. A couple of JCs or community colleges.

Private Colleges Fail, In Debt

This article came out last year. 177 private colleges which 112 are not for profit are in danger. Several on the list already closed down like Dowling, Mount Ida, Saint Gregory's, Bacone and others. If a school have a 1.5 or below are failing. bacone had a 1.7 rating, but still closing. Here are some schools that could be the next ones to close which some do play D1 sports.

Adrian College 1.2
Alderson Broaddus 0.4
Alliant International -0.4 was a former NCAA D1 under another name.
Arkansas Baptist 0.3 HBCU junior College
Azusa Pacific 1.5
Belmont Abbey 1.6 on the edge
Bethany Kansas 0.6 NAIA
Bethel Indiana 0.7 NAIA
Bethel Kansas 0.6 NAIA
Bethel Tennessee 1.4
Caldwell 1.5
Carson-Newman 1.4
Chestnut Hill 1.7
Columbia College, SC 1.4
Ecclesia 1.3 NAIa
Emmanuel -0.9 D2 could be the next to close.
Finlandia 1.1
Green Mountain 1
Hannibal-La Grange 1.4
Hillsdale free Will Baptist in Moore, Oklahoma 0.8
Hiram 1.1
Howard
Huntington Indiana 1.7
Iowa Wesleyan 0.6
Kansas Christian 1.2
Kentucky Wesleyan 1.3
Keystone College 0.4
Lake Erie 1.3
MidAmerica Nazarene 1.3
Morthland 1.7 in a holding pattern to reformed the school.
Multumuh 0.8
Newberry 1.8
Notre Dame, Ohio 1.6
Ohio Valley -1
Ottawa Kansas 1
Paine 1.7
Pine Manor 1.2
Quincy 1.8
Rochester, Mich. -0.1
St. Joseph's, NY 1.9
Saint Martin's 1.6
Saint Xavier 1.7
Salem International 1.5
Selma 1.9
Shorter 1.3
Sierra Nevada 1.8
Southern Vermont 1.1
Spring Hill 1.4
Sterling 1.9
Thomas More 1.6
U. of Mobile 1.2
Westminster, MO. 1.1
Wheeling Jesuit U.1.5
Wilberforce 1.3

All this are private schools. This does not show how bad the public school's debts are. 3 is perfect record that a lot of d1 and D2 schools have. between 1.5 to 2.0 is on the border of failure. Below 1.5 gets a school a fail grade. A lot of schools that closed in recent years have a fail grade below 1.5 except for Bacone who had a 1.7. People who are saying Howard going to the Big South may have to rethink that they might have to go down to D2 or something. Usually a school's debt decides where a school moves to like Thomas More dropping back down to NAIA. There are chatter that Kentucky Wesleyan would be moving back down to NAIA. So far, only Howard at the D1 level seems to be borderline of moving towards rock bottom. This could be also the next big realignment talks that have to do with the small private schools who have major debt. I think Presbyterian should be on the watch list as well. They are the smallest in D1. Bacone had a similar size enrollment as Presbyterian,

Lon Morris College! I actually was there once. Never went back. The place was as crooked as a Soprano waste disposal company.

Wow. One of my friends played JV ball there for a year. Probably a year or two before they shut down. He described them as a joke lol. Most of us already assumed they were since they let him play ball there.

Morthland on the list, is the latest victim of closing their doors. They hired a former Southern Illinois official to help right the ship, but was not salvageable. Bethel, Minnesota in NCAA D3 might wind up merging with Northwestern Minnesota.

The only things Bethel and Northwestern are cooperating on are music and theater.

Former SIU and Congressman Glenn Proshard Named Morthland's Head

Former congressman and Southern Illinois University president Glenn Poshard took over to turn Morthland College around. They turned the varsity sports into club teams last year, and now a year later, they shutter their doors under heavy investigation of a crime.

RE: Colleges and Universities School Debts Can Lead To Closures And Forced Realignment
Morthland College Investigated By State and Federal Agencies, and Fined Millions

How many schools out there doing what Morthland did?

Quote:In a letter postmarked Sept. 11 to Tim Morthland, president of the college, from Daniel Cullen, Illinois Board of Higher Education deputy director of academic affairs, Morthland was notified that the college was to be the subject of an “official institutional investigation” based on a letter IBHE received from the U.S. Department of Education on Aug. 22. According to Cullen’s letter, which was obtained by The Southern through the Freedom of Information Act, this communication with DOE indicated it was beginning an emergency action against the college, removing its ability to access any Title IV student aid funds. According to the IBHE letter, the DOE was fining Morthland College $2,016,789 “in response to the serious violations and breaches of fiduciary duty to the Department.”

Quote:"breach of fiduciary duty."

Quote:Poshard said when he came to Morthland College earlier this year, it did not take long to realize something was amiss. He said in his first week, he had an emotional conversation with an unnamed employee who said the school had quickly enrolled students from sports prep academies, and that in or around January of 2016, staff felt pressure to enroll students from those academies.

Poshard resign 3 months after he found out the problems.

How many colleges and universities being corrupt right now mishandling funds from the feds? This could kill a college or university just like Morthland.

Consolidating Schools Without Mergers.

More Mergings To Come

West Virginia 4 Public Schools At Risk

USF Prepares Consolidation of their 3 campuses to 1

Arkansas's 2 two year colleges want to merge into a larger system

Sounds like what happened to the Phoenix area community colleges who can't afford insurance when the state leaders defunded those schools. But, Eastern and Western seemed to got an increase of state funds.

Judge blocks the merger of University of baltimore With Morgan State.

Peensylvania State Looking To Merged/Closed Campuses

As it seems, the 2 year public community colleges are the ones in danger of merging or closing down. Some states decided to give less funds to some community colleges while others would grow. I have seen that some community colleges are now offering 4 year degrees like Snow College, Eastern Arizona, Arizona Western, Dean College and several California systems. These are usually schools in areas that are in need for such programs. The future in all 50 states could actually merge campuses. Arkansas Tech and UA-Morrelton overlapped in an area that could merge become one Campus. Tech already have the Ozark campus and offer some 1st responder courses at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. Could we see Texas A&M-C.C. merge with Kingsville? Every state are now cash strapped as it is which are leading to these mergers.
