You know I love you 87! All the guys from GCU here are top notch. Too bad the majority of your fanbase is not quite as cool.

I'm sorry. It's not you. It's them.

That might not make a lot of sense now, but stick it in your back pocket. I promise it will come in handy soon enough. Happy to have you here, and looking forward to welcoming the Lancers to the WAC.
Hate to say it but not now or in the future will what you are saying makes sense. It's obvious what you are implying but won't happen. Cal Baptist is non profit, faithful to it's coach during the transition from Division II to Division I, and doesn't think the world revolves around them. Welcome Cal Baptist. I love the addition.

Please tell me more about your deep knowledge and concern for the life and coaching career of Russ Pennell...

Tell me why Callero was fired from SU after going 21-8 in their 1st year of D1 and then Dollar took over. Callero can coach and is a better coach that Russ.

Not sure what your point is but I'll tell you why. Both schools fired good coaches for guys with high profile names that were really not ready for the hot seat. If Dollar had GCU's ridiculously easy OCC schedule Dollar probably would have won 20 games a season too. Also remember Dollar made it to the WAC tourney championship game too cause I know that's another Majerle feather in his cap that he mentions every time he is interviewed now. Anyway, I like Cal Baptist already especially the way they were loyal to their coach who was a winner at the D2 level.

Please tell me why Russ Pennell was fired? The guy is a real coach.

Actual GCU fans who were around for those days feel the same about Pennell being replaced as Aggie fans who said "Good riddance!" when Menzies left for UNLV. Russ was by all accounts a good guy and won games, but it was a boring brand of basketball that was painful to watch at time.

As far as why he was replaced, you have to go back long before Majerle or the WAC invite to D1. The relationship between Russ & University leadership spurred during the 2011-12 season. We opened the arena with a lot of buzz and started the schedule strong, but had fallen to 4-5 in the first half of conference play.

The only thing that saved Russ from being fired at the end of that year was the nine game win streak GCU put together after that point, which was capped by Braylon Pickrel's 3pt buzzer beater to beat Dixie State and propel GCU to the D2 tourney. If that shot doesn't go in, I'm convinced Russ is packing up his office the morning of March 4, 2012.

Russ wasn't fired, but the relationship between Russ and University leadership never seemed to recover. He did lead the team to a 23-8 record the following season playing almost unwatchable basketball, but winning apparently does not cure everything. Even if Majerle had never come into the picture, I'm not sure there wasn't going to be a mutual parting of ways anyway.

There might have been a day that GCU thought Pennell would be the one to lead them into the D1 era, but I believe the sun had set on that day long before the Suns gave Majerle the Heisman.

I can vouch for all of this. And can tell you that Russ was looking to move on. This was an agreement between both parties. One of my employees married a player on the hoops team who is Russ's adopted brother... weird I know, but Russ's parents have adopted a bunch of kids over the years from other countries. Anyway, I was told the relationship was not good after that 11-12 season. The moment I knew Russ should not return was 11/5/2012 when GCU got whooped in an exhibition game against NAIA team the Masters College. I had seen enough. So stop with the BS about firing a "real" coach and selling out for a "celebrity". Russ had never been a head coach prior to GCU. He was a short time interim coach at Arizona and assistant at other schools. In his 5 years with Central Arkansas he is 43-110 39%. He has his best season last year. Russ is a great guy! My kids were in his camps. He was not a good coach for GCU. He did okay, but okay was not enough.

You should change your name to straw man... don't hurt yourself trying to figure this one out.

Straw Man,

Coach Dollar was never a name brand or high profile coach he was UW's #3 guy. He was a good recruiter at UW but thats all he did. We all know his recruiting at SU was meh at best. You more than likely never followed Dollar as a coach until SU was playing NMSU in the WAC, So I understand your shortsighted view points on both schools coaching history. I also think CBU keeping Croy is a good move and to see if he can hang at the D1 level as a HC. I think Croy will be fine but they are coming into a WAC that is now 4 teams strong.

Cal Baptist is officially in the WAC today. They have already been added to the WAC group in the Verbal Commits recruiting site... and of course the official WAC site.

WAC also updated its website design, Digital Network will probably still suck.
