RE: Please explain this to us FAU friends
I believe FAU made mistake by going after the local press, those press boys stick together so maybe the relationship was already strained. Either way it just wasnt a "rogue" reporter, the sports editor and the newspaper editor appoved the accurate article.

This is fact:

"After The Post discovered an error, Florida Atlantic University conceded that it had miscounted women athletes in its 2017 report to federal officials. FAU’s original numbers for the women’s track team:...."

FAU submitted an erroneous report to Dept of Ed. Whether it was intentional or clerical doesnt obsolve FAU from submitting a substantially erroneous report. The reporter did his job.

Looks like FAU go it wrong initially and they didn't want the reporter to run the story. Must be some back story concerning the reporter and FAU.

That's true, FAU still hasnt issued a corrected acoording to their press release. It says "corrected report which will be filed" so FAU hasnt even filed a correct report yet.

Thats honestly a very erroneous "clerical error" kudos to the reporter for bringing it to their attention and for doing his job.

It is great to live in a country with a free press, many have sacrificed a lot for that right lets not forget that.

I completely agree, FAU should have just admitted the “clerical” error and thank the reporter for bringing it to their attention. Now they look far worse for going after someone who notice their erroneous report that was submitted to the Dept. of Ed

I didn't see anywhere FAU said not run the story, they did want an opportunity to give them revised updated report before they ran the story. Because lets be honest once a story is written and read most people will never see the correction who read the original story.

Until I see otherwise I will give the department the benefit of the doubt and go with the clerical error explanation. Its disappointing that the controls in place to verify an accurate report is sent is missing. I would love to see the person (should be the AD) who is certifying the report get sanctioned, but we all know Title IX compels university to provide equal opportunity but their is little evidence the Feds actually take action. Other than an embarrassment and probably a bunch of other reporter across the country checking other schools across the country nothing is going to happen. Too bad.

Oh the back story is that Palm Beach Post has always had an adversarial relationship with the university. They cover heavily UF (due to the large alumni population in the area) and pretty much any negative story is a good story for the Post regarding FAU. Not saying that they shouldn't write them, but if UF had the same issue I guarantee they would have accommodated everything FAU was asking for and probably would have held the story for the updated revised report. Such is life though.

No one went after the reporter. FAU gave him a corrected report prior to the publication and he chose to go with the one he knew to be erroneous. You can not defend indefensible.

IN other words, reporter was a schmuck, who would knowingly publish an erroneous report, despite the corrected report ALREADY available.

None of that changes the fact that FAU submitted a erroneous report to the Dept. of Ed.
This corrected report was only done after the reporter came to FAU with his article and the corrected report has not even been filed yet so it is not even official.

The reporter did his job, no need to fabricate a press release, that makes FAU admin look really bad. As another poster said “hogwash and poppycock”. Anyone can see through that press release to the truth of the matter

Either way, what the reporter printed was accurate, FAU did submit a false report, “clerical” or intentional who knows. But now that the reporter brought it to light, it will be corrected.

You either are trolling or really dumb at this point dawg

Fau gave the guy the corrected report. He chose to run the inaccurate story anyways. That's on him. Any reasonable and intelligent person would get this by now. Who cares if the initial report was a fau mistake or not? The bottom line is the reporter had the accurate info BEFORE publication and they chose to ignore it

That's not going to change no matter how many times you repeat yourself

I wouldn't say a false report, an inaccurate report. Plenty of tax returns are prepared incorrectly, doesn't make them false, makes them inaccurate. Until their is evidence that it was an intentional mis-filing I would reserve the false descriptor. If you have to do any kind of reporting with the Federal government you are bound to have inaccurate information in it do to the complexity of whatever you file with them. There is no such thing as an easy filing with the Feds.

As I said before I will give them the benefit of the doubt as a mistake and not an intentional misstatement until proven otherwise. Either way the review process of the information being entered and then submitted failed and is an incredible embarrassment to the university. But like I said, nothing will come of it. Just like in DC no one ever loses their job due to negligence and or incompetence.

Fair enough, good post. I like FAU and wish the best for them.

I did find that press release to be in poor form but if the newspaper is always going after them I can see how they responded in that manner.

I don't see the press release as attacking the reporter. They requested them a short period of time to give them a revised report (which didn't make it look better) and the paper declined. Like I said before, once the original story is posted/printed the majority of people who read it will never see the correction. The school had to be pro-active (to bad not so in the filing in the report) and get their side out. There is not one school who would have handled it differently from a PR stand point under the same conditions. The paper wanted a gotcha and they got it. Embarrassing situation and a distraction from a lot of good things happening at the university overall. Dr. Kelly won't be pleased and if their are people on staff associated with it still I would not want to be them.
