I like Bellarmine if they decided to start football. If not, meh, they are a great program, and we used to play them in baseball a lot, but I would lean more towards a program with a football program. So I say Co. Of Charleston or UWF from D2, or NCAT.

College of Charleston doesn’t have football. Maybe y’all are talking about the University of Charleston in WV.

Yep, that's right.

I’ve always thought they’d be a good FCS school.

What's the chances of both the U of Charleston wanting D1 and the ASun inviting them? I would love to see either them or West Florida in, but honestly, how many Florida schools can we tolerate. Although, the panhandle should really be Alabama....

I think W.V. would round out a 10 team ASun well.

Ask and you shall receive. Football talks started at Bellarmine in 2016. Looks like they are closer moving to a vote to built the stadium and practice facility. I think it’s only a matter of time. However, they will start off as Div. II.

I’m a bit surprised. The A-Sun doesn’t even sponsor football. And it’s not as if the A-Sun schools all compete in the Big South either. I do understand though that the Big South needs more football teams and that football is a big draw.

I wasn’t. I actually was talking about College of Charleston. Though it would most likely be impossible to draw them away from the CAA, they are a great geographic fit for the A-Sun, pull in the state of SC, literally are on the Atlantic, and are in a well known, nice sized city. They help tie the conference footprint together.

RE: Any More To Be Invited?
Would Charleston (WV) be a quality addition or just a warm body? Their enrollment in Fall 2017 was 2,446 with 800 residential students. Football has had a better than 6-5 record 4 times in the last 10 years. In 2018 they finished at 6-5 and averaged 2,179 attendance which ranks them 98th in D2. Men's Basketball (as of time of this post) is 8-4 and average 468 attendance which ranks 124 in D2. They have had only 2 20-win seasons and 2 NCAA appearances in the last 10 years. They have finished around #75 in the D2 Directors Cup standings over the last 5 years. Men's Soccer won the 2017 NCAA title.

That is a 3-year-old (March 2016) article. Has there been any new developments since then? I have occasionally searched for Bellarmine football news since the first mention of the possibility and have never found anything. When they absorbed the St. Catharine College wrestling team, that may have affected their ability to add football due to T9 status. Would Bellarmine be able to get the support needed for D1 while being in the shadow of U of Louisville only 3.5 miles away?

RE: Any More To Be Invited?
You realize that UC has an enrollment of 1,831, right? Plus they are D-II and they play in City-owned venues. UC plays at Laidley Field (18,500). Their baseball team plays at Appalachian Power Park (Seattle Mariners Rookie League stadium). They aren’t in a position to move up, I don’t think.

WV State University is a bit bigger at 3700+ (about 15 miles west of UC in Institute), but its football facilities are worse than most area high schools.

Both are in the Mountain East Conference. I just don’t see them being able to move up.

I think the Big South should drop football personally, let the schools from both conferences that play scholarship football start a football only conference that is not dictated by the Big south or ASun. Just to keep it honest.

But having a football home keeps the ASun more stable and helps when looking for additional schools to join.

This is long overdue, but will someone please inform the poster of the conference CofC joined when they went D-1 in the early 90s, before moving on to the CAA?

Well, they were in the TAAC/A-Sun from ‘94 until moving to the SoCon in ‘99 where they stayed until 2013 when they moved to the CAA. Don’t see them going back unless the deal was pretty sweet for them.

Good catch. From the google date it is listed as Dec 2018. I didn’t look at the date after I opened it. Yes, I routinely check on the Bellarmine status as well and all seems quiet on the football side. Still want them as an A-Sun member though to compliment Liberty and Lipscomb.

I thought it was pretty clear. He asked someone to remind the OP, so I obliged. Didn’t know if you knew or not.

RE: Any More To Be Invited?
If you are the College of Charleston, what are the pros and cons of leaving the CAA vs Joining the ASUN?

My take, and I dont know a whole lot about the College of Charleston other than what's on the surface.

Pros- it would seem they fit better geographic wise. Even though the ASUN is spread out.

Cons- leave the CAA (more perceived reputation) to the ASUN (less perceived rep.)

Please give your pros and cons.

RE: Any More To Be Invited?
Okay, we all want a current D1 school. And the more I see College of Charleston, the more I like them in the (Current) ASUN. But they have to have a reason to join.

To get into North Carolina would be cool as well.

So outside of current D1 schools, what about UNC Pembroke ? (I like the History of the school)

Then Bellarmine, North Florida. After learning more about the University of Charleston(W.V.) the less I think it would work.

Current D1 wish list would be College of Charleston, Davidson, North Carolina A&T. (No particular order after College of Charleston)

Davidson would not come to the A-Sun when they are in the A 10.
