New basketball scheduling proposal— what do you guys think.
I m told this proposal will be discussed and voted on by the membership:

— divide into East and West for b-ball. Play each division team twice and other division once (16 games)

== After 16 games divide into groups of 1-3 4-6 7-9 and 10-12. For last 4 conference games play the other 2 teams in your pod home/home. So total of 20 conference games

— Tournament will be 10 teams Seeds 1-2 bye to semis and seeds 3-4 to quarters. So round 1– 7 vs 10 and 8-9 on home courts then 8 teams to NO. Then round 2– 5 seed vs 8-9 winner and 6 seed vs 7-10 winner. round 3–3 seed vs 6/7/10 winner and 4 seed vs 5/8/9 winner- then semis and finals

So in NO— day 1 2 games day 2 2 games day 3 2 games day 4 champ game

Teams in pod 1-3 will be guaranteed top 3 seeds regardless of final standings. Only 1 team in pod 10-12 will make tourney. A committee will rank teams 4-10 based on whole season not necessarily final conference standings

"After 16 games divide into groups of 1-3 4-6 7-9 and 10-12. For last 4 conference games play the other 2 teams in your pod home/home"

That sounds exciting for fans of strong basketball schools (get to see better SBC teams at home more frequently), but wouldn't this screw up tournament seeding? For example, in a close race, I could see this inflate the record of the #4 teams while #3 team gets beat up by #1 & #2. What am I missing here?

Edit- nm, missed last paragraph

Teams in pod 1-3 would be guaranteed top 3 seeds regardless of final conference standing

I like it. It keeps your top teams from risking ending the season playing games against teams likely to have poor RPI, and it gives some weaker teams a chance to win a couple of late games against similar teams and gain a little momentum going into the tournament.

So; a team would play two other teams 4 times in the regular season, and a possible 5th time in the conference tournament. All I see this doing is lowering the NCAAT seed.

Maybe 3 times maybe 4. If for example team 1 is from the East and teams 2and 3 are from the West they would have only played once in the first 16

I like it. The only negative I see is this committee idea of ranking teams 4-10

You must be from a power conference. In the Sun Belt, it will almost always improve the RPI and SOS of the teams involved in the top pod.

I wish the conference would set up divisions.

I don't hate it.

We've tried everything else under the sun and the coaches and ADs have whined every year. I don't see a terrible downside after all the shock and LOLs for daring to try something new.

Ten is still entirely too many teams for the tournament. There's no sense in the tenth place team participating in a conference tournament. I see absolutely no point to this other than ADs and head coaches want a chance they might get hot and steal the bid.

10 of 12 make baseball and I think the coaches/ADs are willing to do the same in basketball butI doubt you will find support for less than 10

Don't care. We suck at basketball now. Until we find a way to play like we did way back when we will be a non-factor.

This with the exception of not having a back then - unless you want to toot the horn of a random socon title that led to a first round beating.

Just play 16 SBC games and set OOC standards to increase RPI. This is cute.

But that would require our coaches and ad's to actually work on scheduling teams with a pulse instead of bottom dwellers in the SWAC and MEAC and similar conferences. That wouldn't fly.

The coaches/ADs will go for this 20 game conference schedule if for no other reason it reduces the OOC games they have to find. Lazy

This is also being worked on. Expect better home-and-homes soon.

Yeah, Ragin Cajun Basketball might have to play a team from outside of Louisisna in OOC Play...

Scheduling standards need to happen, but I think all of us will willingly admit that with the current RPI Quadrent system makes it nearly impossible for mid majors to bring in quality home games.

AD's are not going to let coaches go on the road all OOC Play, so we're all sort of left scheduling crappy regional teams and hoping for the best.

I honestly wish Mohajir would just schedule all of our OOC games on the road and claim its because its the only way we'd have a chance at an at large bid, just to see how it gets played nationally.
