Exclamation Phil Savage and the Senior Bowl are parting ways…

Reese’s Senior Bowl: The Senior Bowl and Phil Savage are “mutually parting ways.” Savage has worked as the all-star game’s executive director for the past six seasons.

Happy day for some on this board...

Good riddance. Maybe a UAB player can make the roster now.

Just didn't seem right for someone in that position to be sucking on Saban's balls as well.

Birmingham should go after this event when the new stadium is open.

Or re-create the Blue - Gray game and re-name it something more palatable for everyone and get a corporate sponsor to title it. Just not the same format for selecting players that game had and not on Christmas day.

I might even consider focusing on non-power leagues and lower divisions.

Oh and Screw Phil Savage.

I think there used to be 2 different bowl games - the Senior Bowl & the Blue/Gray game.

Hoping a former football coach at a sister school wasn't involved in either thereby saving us a discussion on it.

Back when there were only 4 or 5 bowl games and they were all played on Jan 1, the Blue-Gray game was played on Dec. 25th and had the pick of lots of senior players. It was sponsored by the Lion's Club to support their eye health foundation, but was a victim of Alabama's political machine in the 60s that required all invited players be white.

By the time that practice was changed, the increased number of bowls had shrunk the list of available players, and the Senior Bowl had developed a working agreement with the NFL giving it an advantage with players (Joe Namath throwing to Bob Hayes got top billing that year).

Starting up a new senior game may be difficult with the large number of bowl games and going against the established East-West Shriners game and Senior Bowl. There was talk of the NFL moving the Senior Bowl to a Florida site, but nothing came of it.

True. Added bowl games would hurt the # of attendees.

One of the 2 as mentioned was before the bowl games with the other being after bowl games had been played.

I may be misremembering, but wasn't there once a game that involved college all-stars against an NFL team. It would have had to be in the 60's or early 70's.

Found it.

See, this is how Google works.

Looking at the game results, amazing how close the games were and the attendance figures. No way today those games would be that close.

The last winning effort by the College All Stars was led by Ron Vanderkellen whose heroic comeback (almost victorious) in the second half of that year's Rose Bowl made it one for the ages. Also playing for that team was Lee Roy Jordan who led the defense.
Some may remember John Huarte out of Notre Dame as the "other QB" signed by Sonny Werblen of the NY Jets for $200,000 after he had signed Joe Namath for $400,000.
