What IS "branding"
We hear about branding from our administrators all the time...branding...branding...BRANDING. But what does it actually mean and how is it applied?

Very interesting article from Pick Six Previews where they polled over 200 top recruits, asking what leads them to make their decisions from stadium size to coach personality to offensive system to yes, uniforms.

Good question. The more I think about it, branding is alot like the supreme court judge said about porn. Its 'hard to describe but you know it whenever you see it'. Regarding football, whenever I see a orange tigers paw I think Clemson. Whenever you see a three pointed star in a circle on a car, you think Mercedes. The golden arches, McDonalds of course. Whenever that logo, color, scheme, etc. becomes synoymous with a particular product/company, you basically have branding.

This has always been a issue here at LA, how we do this, I think for the most part we do well, I ask my wife’s opinion on this subject whether the FDL is better than just the Ragin Cajuns,

Well her opinion is this, by spelling out Ragin Cajuns everyone whether you are in Maine or New York gets the idea that you are from Louisiana, as far as the FDL probably people in the South automatically think Louisiana, while someone in Maine might think that might symbolize Quebec or something. I might have to agree with her on this one

I will agree with the wife as well. You have one of the best nick names in college sports and a source of pride to an entire region of citizens. The school is missing a great opportunity for national branding of the university and your football.

We brand the hell out of Ragin Cajuns!. It’s on the helmet our main symbol is the stack Ragin Cajuns. I am not naive to think we have reach the levels of Clemson or Kansas State when it comes to branding. Yes FDL is a symbol that is very recognizable, even I think it should be the symbol of the university, but most people don’t even know we exist, so having the stack Ragin Cajuns might be the best to make the connection with Louisiana.

The FDL is clearly the Saints' brand/symbol known as such worldwide as far as sports teams go.

Perhaps, but the University was using the FDL long before the Saints even existed. The FDL represents Louisiana in general. It does not only represent the athletic department.

But branding is not who used it first, it's who is known for that symbol, and the Saints are known for it, not the university in Lafayette. There is a neighboring high school here that uses the FDL, and guess what, they are not known as the Ragin Cajuns, they known as the Saints.

In addition to the University in Mobile, the jaguar is used by many high schools, universities and a pro team.

Not very unique is it? 05-stirthepot

U of M is the Rams, so not sure what you are going for, but yes, the Jaguars are used by many. If anything, people in the area know us as "South". That is our branding. Are we nationally known for it, probably not, but that is ok. We will keep growing and maybe, one day, everyone around the world will know the University of South Alabama, simply as "South". 04-rock

The Green Bay Packers "G" is recognized world-wide, but Georgia and Grambling use the same "G" with different colors with a lot of success. Branding Louisiana with the FDL is a good marketing tool and will serve us well.

A FDL is not just a Sports Logo, it’s like a star represents cowboy culture, well a FDL is a symbol that is a representation of French Culture, and French Colonialism, and Catholicism. It’s not just Louisiana that uses the FDL. New Orleans, Quebec, and Nova Scotia etc uses it to represent French Culture.

So the symbol just isn’t a Saints symbol, now whether people perceive it that way I don’t know.

People in New York, or Maine might perceive it as being something that represents Quebec. Which I was saying that the Stacked Ragin Cajuns there is an instant connection to Louisiana, but I really think we should be using the FDL like Clemson uses the Paw, or Kansas State uses the Wild Cat because it is the most recognizable symbol to Ragin Cajuns and Louisiana. If we are trying to become known as Louisiana athletically we need something that as soon as you see it you automatically think Louisiana.

Brand recognition(ie of a logo) and Branding is not the same thing.

Branding is a carefully cultivated perception and identity. It is an ever changing and living thing.

Branding is when you leave a chunk of iron shaped as some symbol or combination of symbols in hot coals and then place the searing iron on the flesh of a living critter.

Interesting to see that most of the top brands are programs that rarely-if ever-do those stupid alternating helmets and units. Big exception being Oregon, of course. Brand recognition has to do with a recognizable look.

You'd be surprised. We had the writer on our sports talk show. He said changing uniforms is a MAJOR plus to almost every recruit polled. They absolutely love that stuff. They don't care that Alabama's uni has been unchanged for a billion years (granted Alabama wins national titles) but the point is every recruit asked LOVES alternating uniforms. A myriad of factors go into a recruit's decision.

Sadly what they didn't do was ask the recruits which factors weighed more heavily than others. So there was no way to say "on average, recruits care most about uniforms, locker room amenities, and stadium size (in that order) and they don't care as much about tradition, TV package, and how far the school is from mom and dad's house".
