Ohio University could change their name to University of Athens in honor of our Greek fore-bearers.

Or revert back to our old name... American Western University.

Or we can rename it based off of some famous former students...

The Ailes-Lauer University.

Yeah, but we were talking acronyms here- UA doesn’t cut it like TUT would.

Eastern Michigan can be Eastern Washtenaw University and UofM can be Western Washtenaw University.

(Washtenaw County is the county both EMU and UofM are in. U.S. 23 separates them).

I thought Akron was trying to brand themselves as "Ohio's Polytechnic University" but idk if they were ever considering an actual name change.

This is harder than I thought.

Dekalb State?
Dekalb University?
University of Dekalb?

The resulting acronyms would be better, certainly.

How about Dekalb University of Mining? Hybrid University of Dekalb might bring in big Federal dollars.

We could also name it after our AD, Sean T. Frazier, and call it STFU.

Be careful with this... UB got torched by the local media and behind closed doors some of the older alumni killed the attempts to leverage "New York"

RE: Renaming of MAC Schools
Ohio University began rebranding in the early 90’s when it began insisting to media outlets to refer to its teams as “Ohio” and not “Ohio U”. The university felt that Ohio State was creating confusion by using “OHIO” on different uniforms and selling apparel with only “OHIO”on it in scarlett and gray. The Ohio University President and Atheltics Director had the university lawyer send OSU a letter basically saying you are violating our trademark and then the pissing match began. A pissing match that Ohio University ultimately won however you still see something here and there that probably violates the trademark.

Its taken some 20+ years but people now refer to Ohio University as “OHIO”. The only exceptions are generally 80 year old former coaches that will never learn and still let the “Ohio U” slip out.

Other than dropping the “U” i think Ohio has the perfect name and wouldn’t change a thing. The only thing i would consider is if they flipped it to the “University of Ohio” and that because Ohio State lobbied the state legistlature in the early 1900’s to change its name from Ohio State to the “University of Ohio”. The legistlature decided against it because of Ohio University. Lol. Yes I HATE O$U!

Any time I hear people do the “O-H”, “I-O” thing I follow with “ Go Bobcats! Occasionally I’m called on to explain that an OSU cheer would be “O-H-I-O-S” , “T-A-T-E”.

The problem with renaming MAC schools is that there are only so many ways to say a university in ohio or michigan

The part about Bowling Green and Ohio A&M appears to be fiction. (Bowling Green doesn't even teach agriculture, to speak of.) But there does appear to have been some serious conversations in Akron about whether to try to evolve to "Ohio Poly."

Personally: I like the idea of calling Buffalo "New York State University." I also think monikers like DeKalb State, Ypsilanti State, Kalamazoo State, and Mt. Pleasant State would probably sound a bit better. But that's just me.

Yeah, whenever I see that four people holding their hands up in the 'O-H-I-O' I think of Athens.

But for that institution in Columbus, I'd think they'd rather have the people standing there with 'T-H-E-O-H-I-O-S-T-A-T-E'

Or maybe go with what everyone outside of Ohio calls them and be 'MOO' - "Miami Of Ohio'

This would be something worth looking into for the University. Whenever people hear Miami, they think of the U, except for us MAC folks. That's a huge national brand you're competing with, which is why most people refer to you as Miami OF OHIO. I feel like a switch to Oxford University could be very successful in terms of branding, plus it sounds better.

Miami should just go with being THE Miami University or “The U” for short. That would distinguish them from the Florida knockoff.
