U of Akron (students & faculty seem to like it)
Kent University (everyone should know by now it's a state university and not a private school)
Bowling Green University (see Kent)
University of Oxford (that keeps it separate from the UK one, unless that is the UK one. Then Oxford University)
Ohio (see Akron)
Illinois Tech University (rather than IIT, which looks a little weird, I took a page out of Texas Tech's & Louisiana Tech's book instead of GIT's-Georgia Institute of Technology, MIT's-Massachusetts Institute of Technology, & OIT's-Oregon Institute of Technology)
U of Toledo (see Akron)
UWM (a little different. More prestigious directional universities use U of direction rather than direction U)
Ypsilanti University (it's been mentioned in this thread, and I like it!! It helps to distinguish the Eagles!!)
UCM (see UWM)
Ball University (maybe??)
I definitely like University of West Michigan and University of Central Michigan for the reason you state. Might as well do it for EMU and NIU too. But the Ypsilanti name is unique.

I like the States in the BGSU and KSU names, and I think Miami of Ohio is unique and more recognizable then Oxford because there'd be confusion.

If WMU switches to UWM now you get them confused with University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and Madisom, everyone from wisconsin calls them UWM. WMU ain't gonna change

In a perfect world NIU and the Michigan schools all drop the directional names, nothing but marketing/perception ball-and-chains.

th
Wisconsin-Milwaukee is trying to brand itself as Milwaukee, not UWM. And although people in Wisconsin may refer to the Madison campus as “UWM,” most folks just refer to them as Wisconsin or Wisky.

For years on end people have called both campuses UWM, that’s not changing. And most locals and students refer to Wisconsin as “Madison”, I’ve never heard anybody from Wisconsin call it wisky.

Wisky is a nickname given to Wisconsin by non-Wisconsin residents. 03-wink

Wisconsin-Milwaukee using UWM would in no way interfere with WMU using it. I believe University of Minnesota and University of Michigan both use UofM

I see UofM referring to the Wolverines all the time being a State of Michigan resident, and see UofM refer to the Golden Gophers on their forum. I'm sure there are other examples.

RE: Renaming of MAC Schools
Maybe it is time for Miami University to change its name...

There's a new report going around that a candidate for a Florida State Representative district was claiming to have a 'Bachelor of Science in Marketing' degree from Miami University. While she had attended MU, the school says she hadn't graduated and they don't offer that degree anyway.

Could you imagine the school's press conference...

Dean..."We have looked into our records, and while she was a student here, she has never graduated. Our offers a Marketing course that results in a 'Bachelor of Science in Business' degree. A 'Bachelor of Science in Marketing' degree has never been offered by the University of Miami..."

Chancellor (interrupting) " wait - we're Miami University, not University of Miami..."

Dean "Sorry, I get that wrong all the time. Are you sure she says he graduated from here? If she's from Florida, maybe her diploma says 'Miami University of Florida'"

Chancellor "No, that school down south is 'The University of Miami', not 'Miami University'. We really should change our name to 'Oxford University'"

Dean "Like the one in England? Is that one 'Oxford University' or 'University of Oxford'?"

Chancellor "We could look it up later...I would be better than being known as 'University of Miami of Ohio' all the time"

Dean "But you said we were 'Miami University of Ohio'..."

Bursar (interrupting) "No - we're 'Miami University', not 'Miami University of Ohio'"

Chancellor "See, 'University of Oxford' would be so much better"

Football Coach "Yeah, you'd just be called "Oxford of Ohio" all the time. So how's that better than 'Miami of Ohio'..."

etc
