And then more recently, Austin Ramljak was definitely a highlight of some bad Rice teams. I'm sure there have been some JUCOs who didn't work out too, but those two were standout players and strong academically as well.

Then there's this Class of 2012 guy, a former Walla Walla Warrior, although he was before both of your times....
Ricky started off at the University of Washington, quickly decided that wasn't the place for him, transferred to Walla Walla for one year, and was next seen in the cafeteria line at Will Rice with his basketball-size afro.

A key member of the Owls' SWC-winning 1969-70 squad was Jim Naples, who played two years at Rice after competing for Mercer County Community College in New Jersey.

"Nifty Napes" was an excellent student as well.

As far as I can tell, this is the list of current 2020 offers. Rice has 2 guys signed (Cameron Sheffied and Mylyjael Poteat). Rice still has 2 projected available scholarships to fill.

PG - 6'0" Noah Hutchins (offered 12/4/19)
PG - 6'0" Kendall McHugh (offered 1/30/20)

SG - 6'3" Jayden Stone (offered 7/5/18, his recruiting has blown up, haven't seen anything recent connecting him to Rice)
SG - 6'5" Ricky Council (offered 7/16/18, haven't seen anything recent connecting him to Rice)

We offered 6-6 G/F Isaiah K. Barganier out of Fulshear. Class of 2022. And we have 6-3 G Antonio Patterson from South Oak Cliff in Dallas for a visit this weekend as well.

Rice needs size. Recruit a couple of giants who give us some physicality at power forward and center. We need guys who can make the high percentage shots under the basket and hog the rebounds. We're too small.

We have two very talented big guys coming in. The 6-10 Texas Tech transfer who is sitting out the year (Malik Ondigo), and then 6-9 Mylyjael Poteat from North Carolina. Both will be impact players right away. We also signed 6-6 Cameron Sheffield out of the state of Georgia. I guarantee as of right now, we're going to be more of an interior based team in 2020-21 than we are currently.

But we still need to sign a true point guard and/or shooting guard. Peterson is playing sort of a point forward role for us lately, and we definitely exposed Middle Tennessee's interior defense in the second half the other night (Peterson had 10 assists in the game). But we'll need someone who can bring up the ball against pressure. Right now, we have 2 more scholarships to give. It wouldn't surprise me if we try to find another graduate transfer guard.

For now, here's the lineup breakdown for 2020-21

Guards - Mullins/Moore/Olivari
Forwards - Parrish/Murphy/Peterson/Sheffield

Speaking of Parrish, do the insiders have any indication that he is definitely coming back to Rice for his RS-Senior season? Is he graduating this May?

He wasn't part of Senior Day against Charlotte. We have 5 seniors - Ako, Robert Martin, Tim Harrison, Tommy McCarthy and Addison Owen. The 4 folks I listed at forward are probably all G/F types but Parrish is certainly a slasher to the basket and not one who will shoot many outside shots at all.

Good to hear.

I am optimistic for next season, but only now, as I was in 2012 and 2017. Hope I can stay that way until September. I really think this team is close.....

I really think the level of next year's team depends on these final two recruiting spots. Replacing Ako and Rob is not an easy task. They've carried the load in multiple wins the past few years and are arguably the two guys who are most dependable when we need a basket.

We'll get better defensively just by having Poteat and Ondigo eligible, but I'm not sure as of now there's enough firepower offensively for us to take a huge step next year. That can change if we grab two more impact guys. But I think there's going to be a subtle realization next year as to how much Ako and Rob impacted the team, in a similar vein to the women's team this year with Iademarco and Grigsby.

I agree with you for sure about Ako. Rob is a great senior leader, but I think his offense can be replaced. Especially because he gives up so much height at his position and we'll going bigger with whomever replaces him. We'll miss his leadership for sure though.

Who gets the last 2 scholarships is important, but equally important is the key returnees have to return in 2020-21. The team needs to keep winning down the stretch and have a little bit of optimism for the future - that will help in that regard.

As big as Martin's and Adam's offensive contributions have been, I think you're grossly underestimating the offensive upside of both Murphy and Peterson, and I think Olivari will continue to improve and effectively replace Ako's points. If we can land a true, ball handling and distributing point guard, IMO, the sky's the limit. This would allow Peterson to focus more on his scoring as a first option offensively, as opposed to playing the role of point forward and primary distributor, which is the role he filled this year. It would also allow him to crash the offensive boards much more than he did this year.

Last year this time, I was thinking he might be able to grow into the next Marcus Evans. Hope he can get his offensive mojo back
