Interesting new name in the transfer portal: wing Marcus Sheffield from Stanford. From Georgia. If the last name and home state sound familiar, it's because he's the older brother of 2020 commit Cameron Sheffield. He's obviously not the big man that most are looking for, and it's not like we can draw him in with the allure of playing with his brother because he'd be a grad transfer, but still probably worth taking a look at. Has consistently averaged 15-20 minutes, 5-7 points on 38/35/78 shooting.

I had speculated that possibility in post 169.

Verbal Commits shows him with an offer from LSU

I wonder if he might be a graduate transfer possibility? We'll take older bro. next year, and then get younger bro. coming in the year after that?

Sheffield commits to Elon where I imagine he'll put up very good numbers. Would have obviously been an impact player at Rice, but he isn't a big so not the end of the world to miss out.

PJ Byrd transferring from VCU after 1 year. He was that team's back-up PG this past season. Fort Bend kid (Bush HS). Maybe he's finally the TBA from the Marcus Evans trade?

Probably not, but he'd be a good fit for Rice basketball even if he has to sit out a year (which he probably will).

Interesting that he's transferring. I imagine his connection to Rhoades/Byers was pretty strong because I'm pretty sure he was interested in Rice because of one or both of them. VCU is pretty loaded for next year and Rhoades likes to distribute minutes to keep his press fresh, so maybe a case of a kid just wanting to play more. Or quite possibly just didn't like the havoc system, which can also happen.

Hope we hang onto Sheffield, he looks like he could blow up this summer if he performs like this.

He's in a bit of a weird spot. A hotbed of recruiting which means you know there are power conference teams sniffing around hoping he opens up his recruitment. Looks like his stock is going to rise significantly which might make him wonder if Rice is still the right fit. Coach who probably recruited him left for another job, so does he have that same relationship with the rest of the staff?

Gonna be interesting because he looks like a legit impact player and a perfect fit for Pera's system.

Malik Ondigo commits. Transfer from Texas Tech who will have to sit out. He was a 3* out of HS but has played sparingly, which isn't surprising given Tech's success over the past two years. On the plus side, his production should increase against lower competition and I imagine he's well schooled defensively. But on the flip side, this means that we're done for this class and have a ton of question marks in the front court for the upcoming season. Harrison/Crisler/Fiedler is literally all we have for big men. So I guess we can expect a lot of small ball, but I'm still pretty worried especially if one or both of the freshmen aren't as ready as the staff expects.

Not for next year, but transfer from the runners up:

Mark Berman

@MarkBermanFox26

6’10 forward Malik Ondigo commits to transfer from Texas Tech to @RiceBasketball. He'll sit one year with two years of eligibility.

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
That's great news. We've had a very good history with sit out transfers through the years so I'm fine with having a player with Final Four experience (18 games played at least for a Final Four team) sitting out and helping out with the scout team next year.

It's not quite as bleak inside as you might think. In addition to Harrison/Crisler/Fiedler, you've also got Robert Martin (who was 2nd on the team in rebounding last year) and Drew Peterson I think will become a better inside player as he gets stronger and older.

I also think reading between the lines that the fact we're signing a true transfer means the staff is pretty content no more roster changes at this point. Losing QMB isn't great, but we're going to be returning a lot of production from last year. And I don't know if I have faith in Harrison any more to develop but for years I thought he was going to be a big time inside player. Maybe his injuries held him back and he might be healthy in 2019-20?

I appreciate your optimism but I see our inside game as being a real deficiency this year, more so defensively than offensively. QMB covered up so, so many gaps in our defense last year. We gave up 0.97 PPP when he was on the court versus 1.09 PPP when he was off the court. That's a massive discrepancy and I have no clue who replaces his presence. Harrison has struggled to see playing time in large part because of his defense, Crisler and Peterson need to put on a lot of weight to be somewhat formidable inside, and Rob just isn't big enough even if he is strong enough.

Like we can run a lineup out there of Mullins, Ako, Murphy, Peterson, Crisler which has good size at every position, but I don't think that's a recipe for longterm success. Our perimeter defense better be extraordinary or I think we're going to get gashed again.

Lamont Butler committed to San Diego State. Was a pretty high priority target, but not surprising in the slightest that he chose to remain on the west coast. We've still got a bunch of other PGs that we're looking for, so not a board breaker.

I've been wondering the same thing. It seems, however, that he hasn't made a decision (or found a place).

Last week Big Shots (but bad at math) Recruiting had him among its seven "Top 5" available Power Forward/Center transfer possibilities: https://bigshots.net/transfers-top-5-ava...s-centers/
