RE: Good news everyone
I am bothered by this. maybe it's just me being ready to be done with the conference I'm at. I think this is hour 22 of 24 hours of lecture in 3 days.

correct me if I'm wrong...but isabell would ask for a release to transfer to another team. that's the only thing I can think of. this is after he declared himself as eligible for the nba draft.

so I have to ask the question...who does he think he is? he's a great player AT THIS LEVEL but beyond the caa he is an undersized guard who I don't see as any type of high division 1 prospect. I definitely don't see him as an nba prospect. maybe he's a jj barea type who I also didn't think would amount to much. he stuck it out at northeastern, still got drafted, and still became a productive nba player. isabell certainly isn't a legit prospect like damion lee.

he should've stayed at Drexel in my opinion. he comes off as delusional lately and showed no loyalty to coach spiker who gave him a chance. usually I side with athletes who want to transfer...but this makes me think the ncaa is onto something with their transfer rules. I don't think he should be allowed to go somewhere and play after he just transferred in here. somebody needs to teach him some loyalty and keep him from making bad decisions.

hopefully coach spiker has learned his lesson that he can't trust these kids. he needs to build the program with a solid foundation of his own recruits. I'm really not liking what I'm seeing from his guys and his transfers are blowing up in his face. maybe I'm over-reacting but we went from a possible caa contender to a doormat with this move. suddenly we're way off schedule from any type of rebuild.

RE: Good news everyone
I think we need to keep a few things in mind..

First off, I agree that I dont think Tramaine will be as successful at a higher level than the CAA. He will realize that the first time some 6'10 PAC-10 center tosses one of his layups to center court. Dont get me wrong, I'm thrilled with what he did last season, and I wish him the best, I just fear that he's biting off more than he can chew.

As for trusting the kids, again, no offense to anyone involved in recruitment etc. but there were some red flags from the start here. Tramaine is doing what is best for Tramaine, and maybe that's a good thing for Drexel basketball. Only time will tell.

As for the CAA, this is now three big losses for the conference: Isabell, Zane Martin and Ryan Daly. Let's not forget that Justin Wright-Foreman also declared for the draft. He's got a better chance than Isabell but lucky for Hofstra, he isnt in a "transfer and play" situation like Tramaine.

It would be good for Drexel if Spiker learns from his mistakes. I think of transfers as bridging a team to recruits that need time to develop. I’m not sure we have any of the above headed into year 3. I’m starting to think it might take a miracle to get this turned around in the next 2-3 years.

well this years class is a juco transfer ... a grad transfer that averaged 9 minutes a game on a 9-22 team ... and a HS kid with no d1 offers.

spiker is going into year 3 of the great drexel basketball rebuild

if they dont win this year ... what do you think the recruiting profile will look like for a coach heading into contract year, that hasnt won, that plays in front of no fans????

RE: Good news everyone
I'd give On Court Success about a C, especially if we're talking about the past decade. This is not a school set up for athletic success, so I have no expectations. They're in a solid mid-major conference and have had winning seasons. It doesn't move the needle but it's not a complete failure either, unless your expectations are too high for a pretty unknown mid-major university that's sixth in terms of historical recognition in its own city.

Recruiting I'd give a D, while he hasn't really done well in this regard, he's also gotten pretty unlucky. If he learns from the Isabell fiasco then this is going to improve.

Culture I'd give no lower than a D; Howard signing with La Salle is not a complete failure for the program. The A-10 is a bigger conference than the CAA, getting an alum to coach there has positives.

The state of Drexel men's basketball is pretty bad right now, but your hot takes are still a vast overreaction. Or maybe I just don't care enough about the program to think that it can and should be one of the top mid-major teams in the country year in and year out. But it keeps me from being disappointed all the time, so maybe you should try it, lol.

top mid major teams in the country year in and year out?

id take "top team in the caa once every 20 years"

in the 6 years since the big 3 left the caa:
- james madison has won a caa title
- delaware has won a caa title (old america east foe)
- northeastern has won a caa title (urban non football school)
- charleston has won a caa title ("urban" non football school)
- william and mary has appeared in 2 caa title games (academic-first school)

meanwhile at drexel...

Bruiser never won anything of consequence either, why do we want him back? Wanting a better recruiter is valid, but bringing Bruiser back would be a massive setback.

i really think he's making an effort to change culture. that's why i want him to succeed. perhaps...as you have pointed out many times...it's the people above him that are more to blame.

I'm trying to avoid falling into your little troll trap..

However, to say that he can't recruit at the D-1 level with such a small sample size at Drexel to work with is downright laughable.

Facts...
Spiker was an assistant at Cornell from 2004-2009. He was one of the main recruiters on the staff and was largely responsible for putting a dominant team on the court that won 3 straight Ivy League titles and a trip to the Sweet 16. And this wasn't at Penn or Princeton. This was at Cornell, which is a school that had historically little to no success in Men's Basketball throughout their history.

Yeah, you can rip on Spiker for things, but culture is not one of them. Bringing the students down for the shell drill pregame is a cool thing that has the chance to grow into something special and the Gold Jersey games are a bit corny, but a nice touch. Looking to establish a culture is something he brought from Army:
Quote:When Army basketball Coach Zach Spiker sits at his office desk, it is impossible for someone sitting across from him not to notice the dozen ring-sizers that dangle from the shelf behind him.

“Brought them from Cornell,” he likes to say. “We used them there. All our guys know that the goal is to use them here.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/co...c65814e7f2

The coach isn't the one that decided, when new banners for the DAC were ordered, to not replace the championship banners from the ECC and NAC years and instead go with a sole CAA Regular Season championship banner.

According to this, the culture for the entire school needs renewal:
https://www.thetriangle.org/opinion/scho...d-support/

Unfortunately, space that isn't providing lucrative ground lease payments seems to be considered wasted space at the moment.

I was president and CEO of the group. I think it’s still up. I tried to delete it since honestly it’s not something i’m proud of. The Fake Zilmer twitter account is way better.

Am I concerned? Yes. Am I angry like I was a few years ago? No. Maybe I should have called it “Angry Fans...” and maybe I should have directed more if it towards Zilmer, Frey, etc. I was overseas so wasn’t getting to see the bigger picture.

Or maybe you realize that you have a life and/or have mellowed after having a kid. Drexel Basketball is an entertainment source but it's not something to control our lives. Sports is a bunch of games, and there's no reason than anybody should ever get angry over things that we as fans have no control over.

And you are missing the point as well. Spiker is doing his best to put a culture in place. He is trying to create something from nothing. Recruiting at Drexel would be a challenge for any and all coaches. You need to build a culture firs,t then sell the recruits on the culture, especially when you certainly dont have tradition and facilities in your favor. Drexel is not going to sell itself, but if you build a good culture it can begin to sell itself.

RE: Good news everyone
My eyes roll immediately at the mention of the mythos of "Philadelphia basketball". Even with Bruiser, there was no push in the Philadelphia community to give Drexel recognition in any meaningful sort of way. To claim that Spiker is at a significant disadvantage because he's not "Philadelphia enough" is a huge reach to me. By all accounts, the Philly community respects Spiker and his desire to build a culture at Drexel. Maybe he's at a disadvantage in recruiting because Drexel is currently relatively unknown, not part of the Big 5, has no school spirit or culture to speak of, hasn't made the tourney in decades, and has an AD and president whose priorities are not necessarily pointed towards men's basketball despite it being (supposedly) the school's marquee sport. Spiker's "Philadelphia-ness" falls very low on my personal list of issues.

inability to win recruiting battles vs the likes of hofstra northeastern william & mary = problem
