And you are missing the point as well. Spiker is doing his best to put a culture in place. He is trying to create something from nothing. Recruiting at Drexel would be a challenge for any and all coaches. You need to build a culture firs,t then sell the recruits on the culture, especially when you certainly dont have tradition and facilities in your favor. Drexel is not going to sell itself, but if you build a good culture it can begin to sell itself.

Philadelphia is in the blood of Fran Dunphy, Phil Martelli, Bruiser Flint, Ashley Howard, Aaron McKie, and Jay Wright. Spiker is not Philadelphia basketball, he will always be at a significant disadvantage in the community.

RE: Good news everyone
My eyes roll immediately at the mention of the mythos of "Philadelphia basketball". Even with Bruiser, there was no push in the Philadelphia community to give Drexel recognition in any meaningful sort of way. To claim that Spiker is at a significant disadvantage because he's not "Philadelphia enough" is a huge reach to me. By all accounts, the Philly community respects Spiker and his desire to build a culture at Drexel. Maybe he's at a disadvantage in recruiting because Drexel is currently relatively unknown, not part of the Big 5, has no school spirit or culture to speak of, hasn't made the tourney in decades, and has an AD and president whose priorities are not necessarily pointed towards men's basketball despite it being (supposedly) the school's marquee sport. Spiker's "Philadelphia-ness" falls very low on my personal list of issues.

^^^ agree w jcohen

inability to recruit the next scott rodgers rashaan london aquil younger or tim perry from philly is the least of drexel's problems

inability to win recruiting battles vs the likes of hofstra northeastern william & mary = problem

Pretty sure Herrion didn't have Philadelphia running in his blood.

really this just highlights the debate we've always had in the past. you followed drexel basketball because...well i don't really know why. i guess it's nice to have the ad stop by and say hi to you after the game from his suite area. it's hard for me to think of anything i'm less interested in than that.

i follow drexel basketball because i want to win. i'm not going to waste any more of my time trying to defend that.

sounds like the key to drexel building a fan base boils down to the ad saying hi to 2500 people a game !!!

If he did that, and people actually were open and honest with him, maybe he would actually start to realize that changes need to happen. Or maybe he wouldn't care whatsoever. At least it would make it appear as if he cares enough about basketball, which currently appears to be a struggle

Once again, lets examine the root-cause of the issue. A complacent culture that lacks ambition. Tolerating mediocrity is contagious.

so you're saying you're doubtful the ad will say hello to 2500 people per game?

Can the athletic director sell 2500 tickets per game?

Hand to God, when I mentioned that slogan to an athletics staffer, his reply was "That's a University slogan - not Athletics"

Drexel Squash has been a rather ambitious program, we even landed John White to coach the program. Drexel squash has been consistently ranked in the Top 15, and plans to relocate to Philadelphia's historic armory.

Philadelphia Armory Historic Events

- Nirvana
- Wu Tang Clan
- Notorious BIG
- Run DMC

.... Drexel Squash

Tramaine Isabell just signed with Saint Louis.. I guess the A-10 is a better conference.. but he could have been CAA Player of the year. How much more prestige will he get with a one in Done St Louis team. I wish him luck but I don't think St Louis is a better School except for the Conference they are in.
