OT: Washington St football audit mismanagement
http://www.espn.com/college-football/sto...cs-program

"The environment within Athletics ... did not support a culture of compliance or fiscal responsibility," according to the audit, which was completed in mid-April.

The document comes as leaders of the school grapple with a $67 million athletic budget deficit built up over recent years.

Washington State, located in Pullman, a town of 30,000 that is far from the state's major population centers, has the smallest football stadium (32,700 seats) and smallest athletic budget and revenues in the Pac-12 Conference. The school spends about $70 million per year on athletics.

The department has run a deficit of up to $13 million per year in recent years. The deficit is now down to about $9 million per year, and the school is developing a plan to balance the sports budget.

I'm real surprised that some bigger P5 school (e.g., Nebraska, etc..) hasn't already hired Mike Leach away from WSU. Leach is an incredible coach that has already turned two perennial loser P5 football programs (TX Tech & WSU) into consistent winners and consistent conference championship contenders. That's extremely hard to do for more than just a year or two, proving that Leach is no flash in the pan. And he's done it by playing a very exciting, wide open, brand of football that appeals to fans.

Poor Pat Chun, couldn't find a job fast enough to get out of FAU (although it is believed the President suggested to him to find a new job). Nothing like starting a new job and inheriting a poop storm!

Maybe it has something to do with Washington State's football program being noted for having the highest arrest rate of any program in the nation, as well as the (still ongoing, I believe) controversy surrounding his firing at Texas Tech.

I don't believe the story about Adam James from the first time I seen the allegation of what Leach did. Adam was most likely mad at his coach and since the baby of one of ESPNs hot shots and known as one of the ones to give SMU the death penalty in Craig James, Texas Tech fired him. If I was Leach I think Id sued Texas Tech for wrongful termination.

I think most people agree that Leach got an unfair deal in that situation and it definitely wasn't worth firing him over it. Many Tech fans would love to have Leach back now.

RE: OT: Washington St football audit mismanagement
The yearly $13M deficit isn't great but they're getting a pretty small allocation from the school. I'd bet that they'll have closed the gap given their football performance this season.

Also curious if it was an internal audit or external audit. ESPN throws out this huge article about the Wazzou audit, but the result was that they only missed out on $160k in ticket revenue. I bet they paid their auditors more than $160k just to find the problem.
