I guess I thought that way because it's highly prevalent amongst high schools in centex.

You don't have to backpeddle, I think originality absolutely does count for something. I just don't think the "Eagle" is on another level of lack of originality from some of the other nicknames in the conference.

Like who else? I can only think of two panthers including GSU.

Pitt, FIU, Eastern Illinois, Northern Iowa, High Point, and others

I was really only thinking FBS but yea I definitely forgot about FIU. But who else do you think is unoriginal?

I think Ragin Cajuns and Chanticleers are the two most original with the Cajuns having a slight edge. I don't think the rest are unoriginal. Just not on the same level of uniqueness as those two. I'll be the first to admit that Eagles are pretty generic as are some of the others in the conference.

Now if we really wanna have some fun, which Mascot has the best/most original name. That would be a good category.

We need to keep a tab on these polls, so far GS has the best helmets, App St. has the best dressed mascot.

I can think at least 30 poll questions off the top of my head. Think before sept. We will get to that .

My only issue with Chanticleers is that the school was part of the University of South Carolina system for a time, and that was when the name was adopted. Someone apparently pulled out a thesaurus and looked up Gamecock.

Without that connection it would super cool, instead it feels like UTSA being Steers, and UTA being Bovines.

RE: Who has the Best Nickname in the Sunbelt Conference?
I would have to give the Ragin' Cajuns my vote for the most original. I love my Mountaineers, and wouldn't change it for anything, but it's not as "original" as the Cajuns. Arkstfan made the point I was going to make about the Chanticleers. You certainly don't see that specific word used, but its adoption was largely derivative of the SC Gamecocks. I was kind of disappointed when they set that mascot. Seemed like a missed opportunity to have unique "ocean" themed mascot that would have helped set their identify. No offense intended to CCU....It could have been a whole lot worse. At least you're not the "Blue Hens" (or the "Teal Hens" in the case of CCU).

Mavericks would also be in the running for a pretty a unique mascot (not completely unique but certainly not overused) that fits the region / school.

The Warhawks of ULM are criminally underrepresented in these responses.

I actually agree that Warhawks should be in the running. I tend to mentally group them with other hawk / falcon / eagle type mascots but the tie in with the fighter planes actually makes the nickname pretty unique. Cool nickname!

RE: Who has the Best Nickname in the Sunbelt Conference?
Georgia Southern, Georgia State, UALR sorry LR, Troy, USA, TXST go out automatically because they use such common names though done so earnestly. Just for the heck of it, I'll toss UTA in the pile because while not as common, Mavericks isn't that out there on the unique scale overall, it was a nice save from Rebels, just a shame that the NBA team took it on 8-9 years later, also a shame that whomever sold UTA it's current logo stayed up all night and then remembered they were supposed to turn something in first thing in the morning and basically modified Boise State's modification of the Denver Broncos logo.

Alphabetically by school name.
Mountaineers. Shared by WVU, still fitting. It's the right nickname for the school, it works, maybe doesn't win any glamour name contests but the real thing is creating an identity for the school, students, and alumni. How do you beat Mountaineers for the school?

Red Wolves. The right change. We were among the last to give up our NCAA scorned Indians name and by going slower (there were 13 subcommittees of the committee that made the change suggestion to the Board, Red Wolves was the only name that was blessed by each subcommittee, some sent only it in, some sent it along with others) I think we benefitted. Some college football preview website sneered that our schedule featured a Howl O Ween game. He ain't seen nothing with our wolf puns, used to be a billboard coming into Jonesboro that said Howl-O and of course Howl Yes, and the usual Wolves Up calling people to give the hand sign. Knew we had nailed it about two years after the change when I was in downtown Little Rock with an AState shirt on and guy comes riding by and yells Wolves Up and gives me the hand sign. Is it the best, great, awesome? Not really but it put us in a far better place than we were as Indians.

Ragin Cajuns. Cajuns in and of itself is a great name, honors the region, etc., The rhyming is the home run. Takes it next level.

Warhawks. Almost greatness. Issue one. School never can seem to make it its mind whether to emphasize the P40 and internationally recognized Nelson Chenault or some fightin' bird. Issue two. There is always some mumbly mouthed announcer who slurs it where it sounds like Wart Hogs. Issue one is fixable maybe fixable just by doing the imagery together as they did in the new logo rollout. That was well conceived. Issue two, I just gotta live with it.

Warhawks, like the Ragin Cajuns are one of the most unique, cool, mascots in college football today. Kind of like Boilermakers I guess.

I hate the cajuns. They hate us. But they have the coolest nickname, hands down.

A teal rooster from Shakespeare would have to take the prize.

I love my Mountaineers but those beach chickens have a cool mascot.

Thanks but it isn't Shakespeare. It's Chaucer from The Canterbury Tales.

How many DI teams have Jaguars as a mascot? Southern U is the only other one I can think of. It's probably about as common as the mountaineer mascot.

Indiana University-Purdue at Indianapolis (UIPI) Jaguars (they compete in the Horizon League)

I wasn't thinking solely in terms of just FBS or just Division I

Texas State, Ohio, Montana State, and Quinnipiac are the D1 bobcats. For the record, we were the originals.

Although not technically the same thing, I think that "Bobcats" and "Wildcats" get lumped together, sort of like some folks are doing with mavericks and Broncos. I do think that using the more unusual variation earns some originality points.

RE: Who has the Best Nickname in the Sunbelt Conference?
USA’s original colors the first year were black and gold. Maybe a Jaguar fit into that color scheme? But the colors looked too similar to Southern Miss and nearby Davidson High School so we (rightfully) changed our colors to red, white, and blue. We are “USA” after all! I always wondered if Patriots ever came up as a potential mascot for us. At least the Jaguar isn’t overused like most other cat mascots are. We don’t have the best nickname or most unique mascot but I’m not disappointed in being the Jaguars. They’re actually pretty bad cats.

The answer to the question, by the way, is the Ragin’ Cajuns. I always pondered if we’d ever reach a point where it is considered politically incorrect, similar to how “Fightin’ Irish” gets attacked from time to time.

My high school mascot was Eagles. They even rippied off the Philadelphia Eagles logo. Made minor changes and changed the colors.
