RE: OT: On a trip to Savannah
I haven't been back in Savannah for a while, but grew up there.

City Market was my favorite spot to hang downtown.

Bar Bar used to be my favorite hangout. I remember when it was usually filled with people coming off of work still in business suits or business casual. The bartenders were great and it had a nice vibe. Later it added a small dance area to the back and the attire turned completely relaxed (to the point of shorts and flip-flops).

Vinny Vans has good NY style pizza. large floppy slices.

Occasionally they have live bands playing there in City Market too.

On River St...
I personally love Spanky's. Best chicken fingers w/ Honey for dippin.
There is an Irish Pub (can't think of the name) that is really nice and has live music most nights.
Several other pubs, rooftop bars, and restaurants on the street to check out too.

Also, Churchills on Bay St. is pretty nice too.

Rancho Allegre Cuban restaurant.

Get a mojito (or three), fried plantains and anything with pork.

Club One. I don't remember too much from the time I visited. I didn't get lucky, but my brother did. It was such great time he never even talked about it. I think Charlie Daniels rewrote a song about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWzTU7VAPLY

Welllllll Club One is a gay bar, but if that's your scene, it's a cool place. The Charlie Daniels song is about a place called "Cloud Nine Bar" in Houston but yeah that's basically what Club One is.

The Irish pub on River Street is Kevin Barry's. A talented friend of mine by the name of Brendan Nolan is currently playing there. You need to like Irish folk music, though. The music room is separated from the bar, which sometimes gets pretty lively.

Rock's on the Roof, on top of the Bohemian Hotel, is maybe the trendiest place on River Street.

The Crystal Beer Parlor is downtown but a little off the beaten path and is one of my favorite eateries.

If you're in town at lunch time and don't mind family-style or standing in line, try Mrs. Wilkes' instead of The Lady & Sons.

I could go on but looks like you've got plenty of input already. If you have any other questions let me know. I'm Savannah born and raised and am still here after quite a few decades.

The Grey. In the old greyhound bus terminal. Cool.

The Savanna Seafood Shack. Downtown. Awesome. Cheap. Get the lowcountry boil.

Savannah Candy kitchen . Buy a freshly made praline. In the cool old market square downtown.

Please do not go to the Paula Dean traps. All you get is a hurt wallet and heartburn.

RE: OT: On a trip to Savannah
I spent 3 days in Savannah last fall. Overall the food was a disappointment. The best the wife and I found was Savannah Seafood Shack and it was pretty meh. There have to be better locally owned places but I didn't find them in my short time there. But it is one of the most beautiful cities I've had the pleasure to walk around in.

I agree. It is not a city for awesome food.

I was impressed by the seafood shack based on price.

Savannah’s cousin Charleston is the foodie city. Just below the big 5. Chicago, NYC, DC, LA, New Orleans.

Going to agree on Charleston. That was the second stop on that trip. If I go back that way I'll skip Savannah and spend my time in Charleston. I didn't get to see enough of that town.

Hate to hijack this thread but I too am visiting Savannah, but my trip is permanent. Job opportunities for both my wife and I. Full disclosure, I have a middle schooler and the wife and I are weighing the options of Effingham Co vs Richmond Hill. Thoughts?

Congrats on the jobs! Personally, I’d rather live in Effingham although Richmond Hill is growing fast. I don’t have school aged kids though so I’m not sure how the school systems compare and such.

EDIT: I asked one of my friends who is a teacher in the area and she says the South Effingham district is the best in the area. Hope that helps!

Also consider Pooler. It's closer to Savanna than either of those places and is pretty nice. Live where you can avoid West Chatham Elementary and Middle School, though if that's possible.

Welcome to the 912!

I don't know much about the public schools in those counties, but both seem to be a better alternative to Savannah's schools. Both suburbs are growing quickly, and Pooler as well. Any of those are certainly lower cost of living vs living in town (although the south side tends to be more affordable vs mid town/the islands/downtown).

If you decide to move into Savannah do a lot of research on the schools for the kids. Public schools in Chatham are some of the worst in the state and most go the private route.

Best of luck with the move.

RE: OT: On a trip to Savannah
For me, my go to in savannah is spankys since it’s fairly cheap and a nice environment. I also like goose feathers for breakfast. I like bar bar and treehouse for drinking since they are both on market street, and easily accessible with a short walk from most of the hotels. Fill in a couple trips to wet willies and it rounds off a good night.

I completely agree with your assessment. A beautiful city to walk around in
but can’t compare to Charleston’s food scene. The one restaurant I was going to recommend is now closed. It was several blocks from the river but well worth the walk. sadly it didn’t have any pirates or leprechaun’s so the tourists didn’t keep it afloat.
