Seriously, I could see students voting this down if there's a steep price tag attached. I'm thinking somewhere around $30/head/semester is the upper limit of what they'd approve.

For you Title IV experts, does this mean we'd need a new women's sport also?

While I'm not an expert, I think Title IV is actually related to federal financial aid/funding. Title IX is the one related to institutional equality, including in athletics. That's all I got, though.

It is a huge investment. As a comparison, Lamar University is an FCS program in the Southland and they have a football budget of $4.3 million. So UTRGV is probably talking about an additional $4-5 million per year for FCS football.

Then there is the Title IX requirements. UTRGV will add 63 football scholarships for football, so they will probably need to add a couple of female sports. Women's softball and maybe women's swimming & diving. Or they could add women's softball and drop men's soccer. I would say $5 million per year at a minimum to add football. If the students are willing to pay it, then it could happen.

If students foot the whole bill, that's about $175/head. 90% of our students come from three of the poorest counties in the US, virtually all are on financial aid, and unless the Pell Grants and Texas grants increase to cover it, $175 is a show stopper. However, I'm guessing Bailey's strategy is to get one or two local rich guys (Vaqueronation knows who I'm talking about) to sponsor half of it or more. Who knows what they'll get to name, at least the stadium and maybe some of the existing academic buildings too. Maybe he can talk the City of Edinburg into renaming University Avenue.

I think the students will approve it. Most of them will have graduated by the time the fee applies. The freshman are hyped up on the college experience to look too into their future. Then when they see the bill as seniors they're going to say "what the hell was I thinking" lol.

Alonzo and Vackar just so happen to be on the football committee. But I think Mcallen is gonna be the one to get involved in building a new stadium. This new edinburg mayor is really screwing everything up and burning bridges with everyone. HEB park may be a temporary solution while a new stadium gets worked out.

You nailed it on the head.

As it is, I think UTRGV and some other Texas schools could get the fan base if they are not in areas that are too heavily with D1 schools like the Cities of Dallas and Houston.

Tarleton can be called up to be an FCS school, but I do not see us as a viable FBS candidate anytime soon. The facilities, funding, and focus from leaders is not there.

RE: Utrgv football decision
The WAC basically has five options for football:

(1) Go FBS by inviting 6+ existing FBS schools. Obviously C-USA is ripe for the picking if UTEP can get over being in a conference with New Mexico State. I’m not sure how vulnerable the Mountain West is, but the WAC grabbing New Mexico and either Colorado State or Air Force would allow them to “right size” and still maintain a travel partner for Wyoming.

(2) Go FCS by carving up the Southland. Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist already play soccer in the WAC. Grab three more and the WAC has the required six at the FCS level.

(3) Go FCS by carving up the Big Sky. Probably only an option if New Mexico State is downgrading given that NMSU is a considerable distance from the rest of the conference.

(4) Go FBS by taking the BYO approach from the FCS ranks. The key is to draw from multiple conferences so as not to make it easy for the transitioning schools to stay put and take UTRGV and NMSU from the WAC. This is probably also the only realistic option at pulling any school from the Summit.

(5) Go FCS by taking the BYO approach from Division II. This probably should have been done the moment the WAC’s FBS status was doomed. Transitioning six schools at once would have been a royal pain, but the WAC could have opened this year as a 14 team conference (with Chicago State and Cal State Bakersfield on their way out), with the core of the conference playing FCS football. Loading up on RMAC schools would have afforded more flexibility in terms of geography.

My guess is that (2) is most likely to happen, although UTRGV boosters would prefer (1). There may still be some possibility of (4) happening, but ask the CAA about what happened when their members started entertaining the possibility of FBS.

UTRGV possibly adding football.... Tarelton State in talks with the WAC.... West Texas A&M opening a brand new, FCS-level (hell even FBS level) stadium..... Maybe something is happening here with the WAC involved

RE: Utrgv football decision
Quote:A feasibility study on the merits of starting a football program at UT-Rio Grande Valley could be released as early as next week, says Rick Anderson, UTRGV’s executive vice president for finance and administration.
...
“Hopefully, next week, we will be releasing our football feasibility study,” Anderson told the McAllen Economic Development Corporation, at a board meeting last Thursday. “We wanted to release it this Spring, so the students have a chance to look at it and ask questions.”

Next week has come and gone, the last regular class day was last Wednesday, and the parking lots are starting to empty.

The same way they usually announce firings/hirings on Fridays, I predict this one will be released the last day of final exams.

So its bad news then. One would think that if you were announcing something big that you would do it when the students are around to throw a celebration.

We haven't heard anything yet. I'm guessing edinburger would be the first to hear something since it sounds like he works at the school.

You are correct that I work there but we find out things from the Monitor or the Rio Grande Guardian. Seriously, that is how they run things now. I got my first notice on quite a few things from you posting here.
