evidently no college aged american kids play tennis so why do we have/pay for this sport

That's because very few top level tennis players ever play college. They join the Pro Tour at age 18 and play there.

US Tennis Association has a ton of programs and academies set up for young players, but those academies are designed to funnel players into the pro ranks...not college. The college level is filled with foreign players who could not afford as a family to pay the tons of money to get into one of the prestigious Tennis schools in the US, so they settle for a College Scholarship and try to improve their game that way.

Tennis at this level is similar to Soccer, with the primary difference that the top soccer academies are overseas and not based in the US, so very few foreign born players play at the college level here, nor do any upper level American players.

Aren't they Americans if they live here

No. They are here on J-1 Exchange Visitor Visas typically, or other types of accepted visas. They aren't Americans and aren't given citizenship unless they apply for it. Most of these students go back to their respective countries after graduating.

Tennis at this level is similar to Soccer, with the primary difference that the top soccer academies are overseas and not based in the US, so very few foreign born players play at the college level here, nor do any upper level American players.

It's also a matter of the higher-level US tennis players being scooped up by teams like Florida, USC, Stanford, etc., which leaves smaller schools like Sun Belt schools to either take American players that simply don't have the training to compete against those types of players, or recruit internationally for top-level players. Tennis isn't like football in that you can pick up the sport your senior year of high school and wind up being a 3-star recruit that one day makes it to the NFL.

For example, Stanford has 11 American players on their team and 1 international player, and are ranked #4 in the country right now... they recruit most of the top US players and don't have to recruit internationally. If a team like Troy wants to have a shot at remotely competing with these ranked teams, they have to recruit internationally and find top-ranked players from other countries that can be competitive. Just a few seasons ago, Troy had a player named Hassan Ndayishimiye who was the #2-ranked player from Burundi and actually represented Burundi in 2016 Summer Olympics. He wound up being ranked as one of the Top 100 tennis players in NCAA while at Troy. If none of our teams recruited like that, the P5 teams would slam the door completely in the sport of tennis.

Yeah, that's where you have to get players from at this level.

Everyone knows who the top American Tennis players are...even at the College level. They are going to get picked up by the top schools. That leaves SBC teams two choices, either grab kids who played High school Tennis and might just be looking for a scholarship, or go overseas and grab someone with more potential that's probably not been noticed.
