UCDavis adds beach volleyball and equestrian

Big West commissioner Dennis Farrell said in an interview before the NCAA Tournament, the conference plans to go forward with 11 members.

He must not have received the memo that Cal Poly and UC Davis are leaving. Why would they vote on Bakersfield and UCSD if their departure was so imminent in 2020? Why not just abstain, or simply announce they are out the door?
Commissioner Farrell also said while the expectation is to go forward with 11 members, he's not opposed to a 12th school if it is the right one. They could be within CA or be from a near-by state. You always keep an eye out for an opportunity.
There's no need for an "amicable split" by Cal Poly and UCD. If they want to leave, just say so.
Amazing that six months previous, UCSD was voted down and Bakersfield didn’t even get consideration since the school is considered such a slug, but brings in much more fan support than any Big West school as Bake isn’t uppity. Dennis Farrell six months earlier said it didn’t have a compelling reason to expand, but now he does? Something has changed.

So the Big West suddenly got a major new TV contract because San Diegans willl all be glued to their TVs in excitement over UCSD? Why didn’t Sacramento St at least get an offer rather than Bake? Sac can actually play in Golden 1 Center now and is close to betting a new on campus arena after discussing it for the past 25 years. Sac St provides a travel partner for UCDavis, so the travel budget would have gone down for the lowly Big West financials. But Sac St may have plans with Cal Poly and UCDavis to skeedaddle too, so the Big West could not get them.
The Big West Presidents must be really abysmal in long term planning as well as in other issues. Those schools wouldn’t voluntarily divide the NCAA pot even further as they need every penny. San Diego St and Boise only got in as they offered big $’s, and in Boise St’s case, annual payments.
Why would Sac play in the Golden 1 Center, when they cannot even fill the Hornet’s Nest? Guess they want more people disguised as empty seats to play in front of.
This is all moot because in 2 more days the Great North debuts.

Who owns the horse?
Equestrian couldn't possibly be a cheap sport to fund.
Actually it’s very cheap as the animal sciences department shares in the cost of the horses and the horses aren’t shipped. In addition, many women will play on a partial or no scholarship compared to say rowing where you largely have to pay them to ride.
Fresno football exists because of equestrian.

We've played 2 games a year in G1C. We will continue to do so in the near future. I would like to see us play more in that state of the art venue against regional name opponents (P12, MWC, WCC).

And why the delay in accepting them? UCSD and Bake don’t start competing in the Big West until 2020.
Why was Sacramento St not selected? Sac St academics are higher than Bake and SAC has many more students and a bigger media area and is a rival and could be a travel partner for UCDavis.
Logic often isn’t used in California, but a money and status issue among Presidents usually forces logic upon them.
1) To give UCSD time to successfully plan the transition, and to not leave the WAC completely wacked
2) Sacramento State isn't interested.
1) BW membership clearly wanted to maintain the CSU-UC balance as well, hence no UCSD without a CSU (Bako).
2) Sac State isn't going to risk its FB home for the sake of Oly sports. The result was #1 above.
The BSC taking CP and fagville in FB only was a preemptive move to kill the WAC by Foolerton. Also as NoDak pointed out, no FCS CA schools were going to go WAC when the state budget was sh!t like it was when those invites were on the table.

And 3) the BW has no interest in reviving football.

RE: UCDavis adds beach volleyball and equestrian
Good to see more schools adding beach volleyball and equestrian. SC has good programs in both and I'd love to see the SEC add it as a sport (I think LSU and Miss St are the only two others)
