UNC is a very well known state institution. Close to 60% of their alumni base is in North Carolina and overwhelmingly in the southeast. Heck, even Duke has their largest alumni population in North Carolina and the southeast. . The difference being where the incoming freshmen come from. UNC also admits a larger percentage of North Carolinians than we do Virginians. My point, especially where it relates to state schools, the numbers will always be heavily skewed toward the home state. Doesn’t matter if you’re in the CAA or the ACC.

Athletics is leading the Gerdelman competition.

Looks like you can only win in one category and we are ahead in both total donors and new donors.

Just passed 12k. Hope we break last year's 12,658, though 14k seems like a stretch to hit

Does anyone know where we finished? The last I heard we were 400 donors short of last year's total.

that is the last update on the page... but then it got some text that said like "we might've made history" so I think they are still working on the final tally.

Wild to see Nathan sporting the new look, sans Dredds. Add the serious glasses and he is looking quite professorial.

It's the Clark Kent vs Superman facade. He steps into a phone booth before games!

Astounding of course, but have to wonder if much of this extra Tribe Pride is related to the overwhelmingly lopsided endowments of these "peer schools" to W&M and alums desire to get us closer to that level. Whatever the reason, Im happy for it, but I have a feeling that if our endowment eventually approaches their gaudy numbers, our individual donor #s will fall off.

I'd like to see your hypothesis tested.

RE: One Tribe One Day
There is no indication of the total amount of the individual givers either. But, what has been done very very well is to try and instill Pride and thanks into the giving process. Nearly all of my current giving is going to tuition, but people are establishing a pattern and are finding ways to stay connected with the College. That likely benefits the College significantly in the short and long run. The numbers add up fast too. If each donor of 11000 gives $200, that is $2.2 million given. I recognize that some give a lot more and some less, but getting any support from alumni is a major step in the right direction for the College and the current students because it means that there is a chance people will notice what is happening at the school and want to support it. But the challenge efforts have been greatly successful. I expect all of us here emailed or called classmates to tell them about the opportunity to give to create a challenge donation. Many of those classmates have now given for 3-5 years where perhaps they did not give anything before. I expect that OTOD will have its highest total ever next year because of a major positive event for the school that happens a month or so before OTOD takes place.

Having worked on committees asking alums for money I gained these insights. Most people won’t answer the phone; some allowing their answering machines to take your message. They don’t return your call. Most of those who deign to talk shine you on with some sort of claptrap or outright animosity towards Wm and Mary. Occasionally, you find an alum who verbally commits to sending a check. Many of these people don’t follow thru. These experiences were gained from scores of calls made by yours truely.
I have written checks annually for the past 25 years with average amounts into four digits. I’m glad there are those out there doing something similar. But their contributions are minimal compared to the others.

fwiw, I never answer the phone when W&M calls.

But I do give money once/year.

I like the idea that OTOD would explode beyond our hopes the year we make the NCAA tournament.
