Yes, I put some small cities in Arkansas, but there are smaller cities within 50 miles of these larger cities. Pullman Washington does not have the luxury of smaller cities around there that Pullman could draw people from. Arkansas have their population spread out while in Washington State, you have population in large population centers like along the I5 corridor like Bellingham, Seattle/Tacoma, Mount Vernon, Everette, Olympia, Vancouver and some eastern and central cities like Spokane/Cheney, Walla Walla, Richland/Pasco/Kennewick, Yakima, Wenatchee, Ellensburg.

Washington State and University of Idaho are too close to each other fighting for fans and athletes.

Um, you do realize that Pullman, Washington, is only about 75 miles (driving) from Spokane, WA.

The distance between Pittsburgh and Penn State University is 130 miles. The distance between Penn State and Philadelphia is 190 miles. Would you consider those two cities within Penn State's region?

It is a 50 mile radius that needs to count for population centers. Russellville Arkansas and Grand Junction Colorado have close to or above the 100,000 population average. Pullman only have 50,000? University of Idaho is in the exact same boat.

Your definition is way too restrictive to make your argument. You'd be arguing that the University of Illinois doesn't include Chicago in it's draw-region because it is 120 miles away from Chicago. That Oregon State University doesn't include Portland (70 miles from Portland).

Most land-grant universities were put out in rural areas. Those include things such as Washington State, Oregon State, Penn State, Illinois, Oklahoma State, and thousands and thousands of more. To argue that Washington State University doesn't have Spokane, WA because it's located 70 miles away from it, instead of 50, is far too restrictive on your definition.

I would have to agree with you on that one, dunstvangeet, although a little better example would have been the University of Georgia and Clemson University, located only 60 miles apart from each other. Both are land grant universities, seeing how both Athens, GA and Clemson, SC are predominantly rural areas. To say that Atlanta falls outside of UGA's draw region (Atlanta is 72 miles away) or to say that Charleston, SC falls outside Clemson's draw region (241 miles away) would be ridiculous, because both cities are heavy supporters of those universities.

The real question is, how many P5 programs does each state have, and how many could each support on the basis of population?

Look at Michigan. We have 5 FBS schools and 7 DI basketball schools, but the same 2 (MSU and UofM) control 99% of the state.

The issue isn't how many can each state support. The issue is how many do The Powers That Be want you to support.

Look at Ohio St. They made the moves to position themselves as the only Power school in Ohio. UofM wanted to do the same thing.
