My Greatest Basketball Moment - Apr 4, 1983
Today is another anniversary of the date Jimmy V, and his underdog NC State Wolfpack, took down the highly favored Houston Phi Slamma Jamma. I will never forget that game, ever. 04-bow

If only Houston had practiced their Free Throws.

Also, that was the last championship game played in a basketball arena (The Pit in Albuquerque) instead of a stadium.

actually, 1996 was in Continental Airlines Arena- that was the last one in an arena and not a stadium.

Yes...after 1983, the FF was played in Rupp Arena, Lexington (1985), Reunion Arena, Dallas (1986), Kemper Arena, Kansas City (1988), McNichols Arena, Denver (1990), and Charlotte Coliseum (1994), before its last arena appearance in the Meadowlands.

1983 was, however, the last Final Four played on a college campus. (Rupp Arena is the UK arena, but is located off campus in downtown Lexington)

Thanks for that hearty reminder. No one has brought that up at all over the last 35 years.

If only Guy Lewis the coach had showed up that day. He let Drexler get 4 first half fouls. All that and they still lost because of a few bad passes, missed free throws and an air ball alley-oop.

That was just destiny that night.

I was many miles and many years from Houston in 1983. However, I loved Phi Slama Jama. I was so heartbroken when they lost.

Great tournament moment, though.

Guy Lewis gets all the blame, but the truth is, just as Houston had taken control in the second half (in large part thanks to excellent Lewis adjustments at halftime), Akeem got tired. The mile-high air got to him, he was sucking serious wind, and so it made sense for Lewis to slow the game down. He needed to give him some rest.

It's kind of like a car race, where you've been behind, but then you surge ahead and you obviously should keep the pedal down, but ... you have to make a pit stop. You don't want to do it, but it's a physical reality so you do it.

If doing so then costs you the momentum, and the race, you can't blame the pit stop, because it was a necessity. Had Olajuwon not run out of gas, Houston would have kept surging, and likely won by 15-20. But he got tired.

This was also before the double bonus for free throws. Unless you were shooting, they were all 1 and 1. Houston kept missing and NCSU got back into the game.

I like the double-bonus. The rules shouldn't help a team foul its way back into a game. The more you foul, the harder it should be for you, and the double-bonus does that.

well just looked at box score, and NC State committed 16 team fouls for the entire game. Watched video, and NC State committed 9 team fouls the entire 2nd half, so it would never have gotten into the double bonus.

Its really destroyed the end of the game. The double bonus should be 3 to make 2 and it would slow down the hacking that goes on in the last 2 minutes.

Whatever adjustments he made, the real catalyst was Akeem. Houston was the better team, they were bound to start to take command at some point. Jim Valvano coached the pants off him that night and not just because they won. He did stuff like put the freshman on the foulline late and had them come out hype and aggressive. NC State had more energy all night except for the first few minutes of the second half. Part of that was the altitude but it mostly due to how well prepared they were.

Even if he did a better job than he gets credit for, Lewis choked that night. It was a stain on an otherwise really productive and underrated career.

What really shocks me is that *35* years has gone by.

That's an astonishing amount of time. I mean, it's like, you live 15 long years, and then you still have 20 to go!

To put it in perspective, 35 years before then was *1948*. That is just unreal to me. I'm getting so freaking old, LOL.

For sure. Always amazes me when a movie comes on and I look to see what year it is and it's been like 30+ years now.

RE: My Greatest Basketball Moment - Apr 4, 1983
I am really surprised they were already playing the championship game in April in 1983. I did not think that started until much later. I know in 1981, the ncaa championship game was supposed to be on the same day as the Oscar's, but Reagon got shot that day and the Oscar's got postponed.

Yes, before 1982 the Oscar's were on a Monday late in March, and so was the NCAA championship game.
