Really doesn't say too much for the three players we lost. One DII, one walk-on at Niagara, and one JC. Have we ever lost anybody to a higher level program? For that matter, unlike FB, we don't have to worry about losing a coach to "greener" pastures.

Tom Best transferred to Nebraska the year after he led the MAC in rebounding while at Toledo. He was the Nebraska "sixth man" on a team that went to the NCAA tournament.

I recall having a lunch with then new coach Larry Gibson and he told me that he was in contact with Best's father. Best transferred thinking he was a sure starter at Nebraska and that would give him a shot at the NBA. That of course did not occur.

TB: Well, we had played Nebraska in

1990-1991, and that’s when they were 26-8. They had a

great team and we went out to Lincoln and got spanked,

and I had a little idea of what Nebraska was like.

But the reason I really left Toledo was because the whole

coaching staff got fired and let go of. Head coach and

all the way down, too. And I had a pretty decent year,

so I thought I could move up into the Big 8.

makes sense. the kid needs to play. juco will love him. fast aggressive versatile, D1 experience in a good program. i think you'll see him have a good year and start to pick up new D1 recruiting interest. the kid has some game and tools and could be a very good defender if he buys into that role too. UT is pretty deep at guard. Plus, once Darrington coming in became a possibility, it got deeper. Rose risked staying buried on the bench as an attacking the glass guard playing behind better shooters.

roberts going to Niagara as a recruited walk-on makes sense too. I mean, I though he could get a D1 sholarship, but maybe he has a connection to Niagara, it's an interesting fit, is still D1, and probably will put him on scholarship the following year if it works out. roberts will pay for school, redshirt and work on his game with the team and then have a chance for minutes as a jr. if he likes it he stays for a 5th yr sr season there, but - because of UT hoops strong academic structure - he is on track to grad in 4 years and could even play at a third school (Kansas?) as a grad transfer.

Adway can play D1 and I was surprised he is transferring. but he will be real good at a high level D2 program and have a chance for a national title at that level as a key player. and he doesn't have to take a year off.

DetroitRocket/Tom:

Thanks for your input. The question was asked whether Toledo had ever lost anyone to a better program. Your name came to mind since I thought if you had stayed at Toledo you would be the MAC player of the year. Larry Gibson did not win big at Toledo but he was actually a great guy. You could have possibly led UT to the NCAA and your name would be remembered as one the greats alongside Kozelko, Thames, Miller, Swaney, Larry Jones, Juice and Knuckles. (Mix is in a level by himself).

The Niagara head coach was an assistant for Norm Roberts at St. John's, I think for Roberts' entire tenure at SJ. With that strong connection, I doubt he moves on to a third school.
