baseball vs UL Lafayette
Not sure I'll have time to do a stat comparison but will try later today. Until then here's a good write up from a Lafayette tv site:

http://www.katc.com/story/37863072/cajun...k-two-step

PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS
Tue - LHP Hogan Harris (LA) vs. RHP J.C. Keys (USM)
Wed - TBA (LA) vs. TBA (USM)

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team is set to close out its six-game road trip with a midweek series at No. 12 Southern Miss starting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park. The two teams close out the series on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.

The Series
Louisiana leads the all-time series with the Golden Eagles holding a 26-21 edge. The Ragin' Cajuns have won seven of the last nine meetings between the two clubs after taking two of three at home a year ago.

The Cajuns are 16-17 against Southern Miss all-time with head coach Tony Robichaux at the helm. Louisiana has an 8-11 record in Hattiesburg during that time having won five of the last six matchups at Pete Taylor Park.

Scouting Louisiana
The Ragin' Cajuns (12-15) are coming off of a series loss to Arkansas State falling 8-7 in 11 innings and 14-2 before picking up a 6-1 victory in the series finale. Louisiana has been strong in the midweek posting a 5-1 record including a pair of victories against nationally ranked LSU.

Freshman Hayden Cantrelle is riding a team-best 11-game hit streak, while senior Kennon Fontenot has had a hit in each of the last seven contests.

Gavin Bourgeois leads the team with a .305 average, eight doubles and 10 RBI. Junior Hunter Kasuls has a team-best 19 RBI after driving in six runs over the weekend at Arkansas State.

Scouting Southern Miss
Southern Miss (19-7) won two of three against Rice over the weekend winning 8-7 in 12 innings on Saturday to claim the series. The Golden Eagles are 3-3 in midweek games this season having lost to No. 3 Ole Miss 7-6 last week.

Offensively, Southern Miss is hitting .291 with 46 doubles, five triples and 30 home runs while ranking fifth in the nation averaging 8.7 runs per game.

Hunter Slater paces the club with a .369 average, seven doubles, a triple, six home runs and 28 RBI. Matt Wallner and Luke Reynolds also are batting over .300 on the season with six home runs each as Wallner has a team-best 29 RBI.

RE: baseball vs UL Lafayette
Harris isn’t your typical midweek guy. Pitched in the Cape Cod League and was getting some buzz from the scouts heading into the year. Struggled early in the weekend rotation so they moved him to midweek.

This is a dreadful team, though. Haven’t won a weekend series all year and could very well miss the conference tourney that they are hosting. Cajuns are near the cellar nationally in nearly every offensive category. Hitting .215 as a team with SEVEN home runs the entire season. They strike out a ton and don’t draw many walks either.

And while they pitch it pretty well, their staff isn’t close to your usual Robichaux team. Gunner Leger (their ace the past 2 seasons) is out for the year and Dylan Moore apparently has forgotten how to pitch. He was so, so good as their stopper in 2015 and 2016, but took a step back last year and has been a dumpster fire thus far in 2018.

While they have been pretty bad on the weekends (in all 7 weekend series they've gone 1-2 each time) they seem to be pretty decent in midweek games. They lost their first midweek game of the season on Feb 21 at Southeastern La but since then they have won 5 straight (2-1 over Nicholls St, 4-3 over LSU, 5-2 at Tulane, 5-2 at McNeese St, and 3-1 over LSU in a game played in New Orleans). This will be both teams first 2 game midweek series of the season so pitching on Wednesday will probably be a "bullpen by committee" approach.

Here's their stats page:
http://www.ragincajuns.com/cumestats.asp...&year=2018

And as Beagle stated their hitters are putting up low averages. Only 1 player hitting over .300 and 5 regulars total hitting over .200 (this counts the 1 over .300 as well). They have struck out 234 times to just 72 walks. They've scored 99 runs in 27 games so 3.67 runs per game

Tonight's starter has 2 starts and 1 relief appearance but has "only" pitched 8.1 innings while giving up 9 hits, 6 walks, 2 HBP and allowing a .273 batting average while striking out 10. He was impressive last week vs LSU going 4 inn, 5 hits, 1 run (unearned) with 5 K and 1 BB.

Sounds like a classic TTT opportunity in the making.

He’s honestly not as horrible and marginally acceptable out of the pen. Keep him there.

Whose idea was it to schedule two weekdays during conference season, by the way?

13 weeks of the season (14 weekends, but you can’t play before the first weekend) and 13 midweek games on the schedule. We skip a week for finals so have to double up somewhere. Last year we played 14 midweek games and doubled up twice.

I always felt like that’s why Cohen did his bizarre 4-game tournament weekends early in the year. It eliminated a couple of midweek games.
