Before Loyola-Chicago and Sister Jean, there was Seattle U
Great article on Seattle U's 1958 Final Four run led by Elgin Baylor from the Seattle Times today.

Quote:Before Loyola-Chicago and Sister Jean, there was Seattle U: the Jesuit darlings of March 60 years ago.

Seattle University had Elgin Baylor, the nation’s best player and some say the greatest college player ever. But the Chieftains also had something that can’t be measured. They were selfless. The players knew and accepted their roles......They were the darlings of the city in March 1958. People couldn’t get enough.

More than 6,000 people greeted them at the airport after they earned a trip to the Final Four with dramatic back-to-back wins over San Francisco and California. “The only game that stands out to me is that game against Kentucky,” Baylor said. “I still think about it, and the officiating was awful. We got the home-cooking. It was just unfortunate we were playing in Kentucky in their home (state), and naturally you are not going to get the calls. It stays with you, but there is nothing you can do about it.”

When was the last time a WAC team beat a final four team in one half of basketball?

Pistol Pete nearly beating Michigan St in Round 1 that one year.

(Remember watching - great game - IIRC it was a late night game)

I think the answer to that question is this year when UMKC led Loyola of Chicago 26-20 at halftime in the game at Kansas City. They eventually lost 66-56, but impressive to get the game in Kansas City. Unfortunately, only 1,482 fans were in attendance that night.

Went to that game in Spokane. MSU won round 2 over Maryland on a half court shot too

Excellent article. I really enjoyed reading that.
