DECLINING FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE: INSIDE THE NUMBERS IN THE ACC
Across the entire ACC, there was an average of 48,110 live spectators per home game in 2017. In 2016, the average was 50,022 fans per game. This marks a decline of approximately 3.9 percent year-over-year. Most of the reductions around the league were minor. In the cases of Clemson, Miami, NC State, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Virginia, the difference was less than a thousand fans per game. The top five ACC schools in terms of average home attendance – Clemson (No. 1), Florida State (No. 2), Virginia Tech (No. 3), Miami (No. 4), and NC State (No. 5) – all remain the same year-over-year.

Georgia Tech athletics has announced a series of comprehensive fan experience enhancements that it plans to implement at Bobby Dodd Stadium over the next five years.

The planned enhancements are aimed at improving all aspects of the gameday experience for fans attending Georgia Tech football games at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Located in the heart of Georgia Tech’s Midtown Atlanta campus, Bobby Dodd Stadium was constructed in 1913 and is the oldest stadium in NCAA Division I FBS. It has not undergone major renovations since the construction of the stadium’s north end zone structure in 2003, which added 15,000-plus seats and 10 luxury suites to the historic facility.

“Bobby Dodd Stadium is one of the greatest settings in all of college football,” Georgia Tech director of athletics Todd Stansbury said. “We are committed to making it even better so that new generations of fans and student-athletes can continue to enjoy a first-rate gameday experience for years to come.”

Among the items being planned for implementation by 2023:
improvement and enhancement of existing premium seating areas;
creation of additional premium seating areas;
improved cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity;
enhanced stadium audio;
improved general seating options;
expanded tailgate offerings.

To kickstart the planned improvements, Georgia Tech fans can look forward to seeing the following enhancements in 2018:
implementation of clear bag policy to increase security and decrease the amount of time that it takes for fans to enter the stadium;
exclusive discounts on concessions and gameday merchandise for season-ticket holders;
a special commemorative adidas t-shirt for season-ticket holders;
a souvenir water bottle for season-ticket holders;
water-bottle filling stations throughout the stadium;
additional points of sale for concessions;
improved directional signage in and around the stadium;
redistribution of entrance gates.

Additional details on the enhancements set to be implemented this season will be finalized and announced throughout the spring and summer.

Virginia........(631)
UNC............(179)
Clemson........(17)
Miami...........110
Va Tech.........171
Wake...........1980
BC...............3809

RE: DECLINING FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE: INSIDE THE NUMBERS IN THE ACC
Just some thoughts on our Season Home avg at Georgia Tech....
1. Fans showed up for Gailey... He avg 50K in seats (was scheduling or excitement around the program from beating Auburn & ND or a little of both)
2. Fans will show up for Johnson..... However the losses in the Peach and the OB in 08/09 really had fans shy away until the 2014 OB win..
-- Interesting that Tenn & the Chick-fil-a Kickoff game packaged w/season tix GT avg less season tix than after a 3-9 season. whats up with that??
-- It will be interesting to see how many people show up this year (Could this be another 2012 only 43K fans show up)

RE: DECLINING FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE: INSIDE THE NUMBERS IN THE ACC
BDS could reliably get 55k if they reconfigured the stadium. But to do it properly is probably a cool $500m. I flatly refuse to sit in the Upper North. Did it for the first FSU miracle game. The experience was so bad I won't do it again. The fact that I am sour on the location despite the epic game kinda says everything.

Georgia Tech needs to take a page from Stanford: redo the stadium so that it is up to NFL comfort level (everybody gets a chairback with cupholders) and reconfigure to put most of the seats on the sidelines.

Duke's schedule matters a lot. UNC and Va Tech on the road in 2017 but at home in 2018. Those are two sellout or near sellout games at Duke.

I think Gailey had the Draw of Calvin Johnson to help him out, people really did show up just to watch him play. But look at the fan years since the expansion from 43,179 to 55K....only 6 years (out of 15) of over 50K and only 2 since Coach Johnson has been Coach.... I think we can get 50 per season under CPJ, but we need to be winning 8 plus games a year.... Or we need a draw like Gailey had in Calvin Johnson.

What Happened at Louisville?? I did not see that coming....

For starters, in 2016 Louisville was a contender for an NY6 game most of the season, with a heavily hyped QB. They sagged at the end of the season, but by then the only remaining home game was against Kentucky. Every game that season attendance topped 50K with Wake Forest the lowest at 51,218.

In 2017 they didn't start the season as strongly as the year before. Their home opener against Clemson was the only sellout - indeed, the only game above 48K. Their last home game, against Syracuse, drew only 34K. There were two weak OOC opponents on the 2017 home schedule (Kent and Murray State) compared with only one in 2016, their home opener against Charlotte which drew 53K.

Optimism (or lack thereof) seems to have played a big role in this decline.

The Syracuse decline reflects the fact that in 2016, Syracuse hosted Notre Dame at MetLife, which appears to be included in these numbers. The average for games at the Carrier Dome increased from 2016 to 2017 from 32,805 to 33,929, which is what the NCAA shows in its numbers. http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_r...e/2017.pdf

Well, many fans got tired of the team's lack of heart and many were pissed at Petrino's coaching and the team not being ready. 07-coffee3

RE: DECLINING FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE: INSIDE THE NUMBERS IN THE ACC
Well I think the schedule has a lot to blame and who is scheduled. Here Louisville has been in the ACC now going into their 5th season, and still haven’t played a game against our closest ACC school Virginia Tech due to this weird scheduling. The ACC needs address their format for we are just now schedule to play Georgia Tech this year. How are teams make rivalry with others if they don’t play one another once every 10 years????

I think it was more Sirmon than Petrino & the soft schedule. As was also pointed out above, the Cards were in contention for the CFP through the first 10 games & Jackson was making his Heisman campaign 2 years ago while last year started with a thud.

I wonder if Petrino was hiring assistants that he wanted or who Jurich told him to hire. I have heard this could be the case with Jurich.

Exactly right. That Notre Dame game drew 62,794 fans. A good reason why ACC members are OK with Notre Dame's sweetheart deal. It's sweet for almost everybody. Clemson's attendance won't change much with the Irish on their schedule, but almost everyone else's will (or they will get to charge a premium price for the ND game, or both).

From this side of the fence that's a feature not a bug. GT doesn't really recruit in Kentucky.

That’s just fine for we do t have a lot of talent to share unlike your state. Also recruiting IMO has nothing to do with rivalries, but then again if you never play one another who cares what recruits you get.
