RE: Baseball vs Rice
the obvious that stands out is both their fri/sat starters are righties.....

my guess is Franklin doesn't start and Guidry moves back to the two (unless Guidry is still in the dog house.....something is going on with that one)

winning 2/3 is expected.....a sweep is pretty dayum close to that....

RE: Baseball vs Rice
I want to talk about that the last time Rice was in Hattiesburg. This game has to be a top 3 moment in the history of Southern Miss baseball, no?

So many crazy things happened in this game:

- Hayden Roberts giving us 4+ innings of 1 run ball. He had a very, very limited role that season until late May/June and came up absolutely huge in this game
- We had the bases loaded with 0 outs in the 5th. Rice brings in Duplantier and he only gives up one run (on a wild pitch). Should have broken up the game right there.
- Keating coming up with a massive 2 strike, 2 out double that scored Lynch to give us the lead. Duplantier was racking up Ks at an incredible clip that game and I was sure Keating was going to be next his strikeout victim.
- Chuckie Robinson making the catch on the pop-up behind the plate while colliding with Hadley
- Nick Johnson getting the win after getting the L against Rice in the 2013 title game at Reckling. W-L records for pitchers are BS, but I thought that was pretty cool.
- Kirk McCarty coming out of the bullpen to face a lefty and nearly blowing the game
- Jake Sandlin saving 2 runs from scoring with an incredible diving catch in the 8th. The Sandlin brothers were probably our 2 most valuable players that season.
- Freaking Storme Cooper (who had started most of the year but was benched for Chase Scott by April) coming up an insanely clutch RBI single off Duplantier that gives us an insurance run (which we would need) in the 9th. Keep in mind that our first two guys that inning got out. Sandlin doubled to left center, then Cooper followed it up with a RBI single down the RF line.
- I like that JC Keys made an appearance at the plate in this game (he had 4 that season).
- And of course the double relay at home for the final out that snapped Rice’s 20+ year streak of winning either the regular season or tournament title. I could be wrong, but I don’t think Lynch was supposed to cut the throw off home there. Luckily it worked out for us.
- How about Cox’s call of the final play? “Sandlin to the plate … swung on … fly ball …. to left center field that’s gonna drop for a basehit … Jake Sandlin over to cut it off, they get it to Dawson, the runner trying to score from third …. the throw to the plate is IN TIME!!!!! HE’S OUT AT THE PLATE!!! AND THE EAGLES HAVE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!”

Of course, we had our hearts broken a few hours later when it was announced we would not host a regional. I thought we had a shot but TCU, Vanderbilt, and ULL got the last couple spots. The “Meltdown in Miami” a week prior probably cost us postseason baseball on 4th Street that year. But that was an extremely fun season, maybe even more so than 2017. We went 1-2 the next week in Tallahassee, but that team’s postseason chances were shot with Cockrell (allegedly) pitching with a torn rotator cuff and Powell out. I still say we could have made a run (if Braley, Cockrell, Powell, and Livingston had stayed healthy. The plan was for Braley to start against Ole Miss in a midweeker after the Charlotte series. Very possible that he could have worked his way into the weekend rotation by the end of the 2016 season which would have changed the entire season (if he pitched as well as he did in 2017).

And I know this post was about the championship game against Rice …. but that game has kinda overshadowed what a classic that regular season series was as well. 3 games decided by 1 run with no team making an error all weekend. Overall, 2016 baseball was probably one of my favorite USM teams from any sport. That squad made Southern Miss baseball relevant again after a 4 year run of bad baseball.

Guidry isn't in the doghouse. I don't think he started at OM because he got hit on the hand at FAU and they were wanting to be careful with that.

Rice has announced their Friday and Sunday guys (didn't see Saturday). Both righties. They might start a lefty like Kravetz or Amador on Saturday. Neither of those guys are very good, but Amador has given us trouble in the past.

We should sweep this series if we win Friday. Canterino is tough and Rice will likely go with 5 LHB + 1 switch-hitter in their lineup. Poor matchup for Sandlin.

2-0 USM T2. Wallner high pop fly single that Rice couldn’t find + Keating sac fly that scored Guidry.

Amador is a righty, BTW. He’s in right now. For some reason I thought he was LH.
