For clarity, as long as our regular season champs continue to lose in the conference tourney, the Belt already has a guaranteed NIT slot - as long as that team isn't selected as an at-large in the NCAA's.

I know. But absent of that event we aren't likely to get a team into the NIT. If the conference improves (with added teams or not) then we can try and lock down a 2nd NCAA bid or know we have a "guaranteed" NIT bid in case our regular season champ does indeed win the tourny. If Louisiana had won the SBC tourny this year it is possible UTA probably wouldn't have been invited to the NIT

Basketball is just not presently a priority of the Belt. Some scheduling requirements would help but there has to be a league-wide committment

Take a pick of these schools that have been consistently good in basketball:
Murray State
East Tennessee State
FGCU
Belmont
UNC-Asheville
UNC-Wilmington
College of Charleston
Stephen F. Austin
My personal picks would be Murray State and ETSU. If one of them isn't interested, then pursue FGCU. Those are three consistently strong basketball programs that will only enhance the conference.
Not a fan of non-football schools.

Yep...add schools cause it's a cinch for a G5 to get an at large.

I'm telling you. We can't expand our way to respectability. First of all, by not enforcing standards, you are telling those who either choose to not compete or can't compete, that they can continue being dead weight. Secondly, any non-football schools we add that bloom under our banner as legit Top 100 RPI schools will be stolen away by serious basketball leagues like the MVC.
We must lay a solid foundation through scheduling requirements and funding levels before we try to bring in more weight to the crumbling skeleton of SBC basketball.
Pretty much. If we want to be able expand with basketball in mind, we first have to make it a priority within the league. Right now, most schools just don't care.

we sure cant expand our way to respectability by adding any of the schools on that list and there are probably no schools willing to make a lateral move from another conference so we need to hire better coaches, recruit better players and beat some good teams before anybody will give us any credit

RE: Gonzaga to Mtn West?
I foresee conference realignment occuring before SunBelt, as it is, obtains multiple tournament bids. Depending on which teams are added and which conference you end up being in, some of us could be in a conference with multiple bids. A conference that includes Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, ODU, Georgia State and Georgia Southern would make it one of the better mid-major conferences basketball-wise IMO.
